Bar beats police bid to shut it down

A POPULAR late-night bar can stay open and continue with its cheap drinks deal, as long as it abides by a strict set of conditions.

The Sky Bar on Basildon’s Festival Leisure Park faced possible closure after police appealed for its licence to be reviewed.

Yesterday, at a hearing, Basildon Council’s licensing sub-committee ruled the club could keep going, but had to stick by some new rules.

These included introducing plastic glasses and sending employees on a course to learn how to spot someone who has had too much to drink.

Chief Supt Maurice Mason, from Basildon Police, is convinced the bar’s controversial promotion deal, which gives people entry and all their drinks for between £12 and £15, is the cause of escalating trouble at Bas Vegas.

Sky Bar bosses disagree.

I would assume that for the Police to oppose a licence then the situation MUST be that bad.

I would also assume that a local Council must take note of the concern of the Police AND BACK THEM.

Failure to back the Police is a recipe for disaster.

I hope that the Council in their 'so called' wisdom have made the correct decision because IF they have not then I can visualise the end result, with comments like 'we told you so' after a serious incident.

Of course I hope that the Councillors that made the decision are free of any involvement with the premises.

Agreed, Evilc.
I think that for the police to intervene with a bars licence, then there must be problems.
On the face of it, you see the big sign at The Sky Bar promoting the one fee & thats it which may sound great, but I used to work at one of the nightclubs there & you'd see lots of people getting drunk, but sooner or later they would run out of money, and stop coming to the bar. Usually a good thing because you can tell when someone's had enough for the night. This obviously wont happen at the Sky bar..they keep comin' back & as long as their speech is coherent they'll get served.
I suppose at least with the Sky bar there is no incentive for the staff to sell more drinks, no pressure to offer drunks more etc...If the staff are trained to recognise (which doesn't require much training!) when to stop serving, that will help, but the damage will be done by that point...

Good to hear - the vast majority of people who enjoy nights out do so responsibly. Fines and punishments for those who do step out of line should be stepped up instead of ruining everybody else's fun.

why not just make it illegal for people to enjoy themselves thats how it seems the police want to be lately and its all because of the minority of twats that dont know when to stop

Vomiting/urinating/f
ighting in the street should be a £500 fine plus police admin costs, instead of the £70 it is at the moment. That'd stop police complaints.

No, the Police want people to behave themselves responsibly. Always have done and always will.

It will always be the minority that ruin it for the majority, that's the way things happen!

The Council should be backing the Police, but they will not as it will impact on the final revenue handed to the Council at the end of another urine / vomit soaked weekend....good going Bas Council! another blunder !

I don't think these drinks deals are good for anyone - ban drinks deals now!

Most of the trouble makers are idiots with no job or a low income job and nothing to lose - put the prices up so they can't afford to drink so much, and you'll fix the problem!

More educated people know better, drink in more respectable establishments and don't cause so much trouble for fear of losing their jobs.

I have a master's degree, but I still wouldn't say no to cheaper drinks!

Yeah, but you would be less likely to cause trouble, as a criminal record would effect your job prospects.

Most of the low life around here have nothing to lose.

This Basildon Council seem to working hard to ignore lawful acting people.

The only way of having a real impact on crime and anti social behaviour is to treat the causes not the symptoms.

Surely the cause in this case must be the supply of booze irresponsibly.

How many times have we heard politicians saying we need to treat the causes of crime?

They say it BUT when some are personally in some way connected then 'It don't count for them'

Urinating, defecating and vomitting in the streets, people falling down drunk, people sleeping in doorways, greedy politicians...mmm smacks of Victorian England. Not much has changed has it. Perhaps its our new immigration policy..make our country a bigger sh***ole than the one immigrants are fleeing and they will stop coming here.

It makes me wonder how this came to be, really? It comes to a sorry state of affairs when one club manager on the park starts a petition against another to 'prevent them encouraging binge drinking' with all inclusive deinks deal, only for them to offer £1.10 drinks on a Friday night and 241 on a Saturday. Surely this is doing the same?! Sounds like a bad case of not being able to cope with the competition!! You know the saying ... if you can't take the heat. Oh, what club was it that someone was shot outside???
