Councillor admits he was wrong to back golf course plans

A COUNCILLOR who voted to approve controversial plans for a £1million revamp of Basildon Golf Course and new driving range, which is using thousands of tonnes of building waste, has admitted he got it wrong.

Frank Tomlin, Basildon councillor for Laindon Park, said new information had come to light which showed members, who voted over the scheme in September 2007, did not have full details about council golf course policy available.

Former council chairman Mr Tomlin says a policy on applications for new driving ranges, in place at the time, was not explained to members of the development control committee, who considered the application made by Basildon Golf Centre, which now runs the course.

He said the policy, which takes into account the impact on nearby homes and green belt of floodlights, extra buildings and driving ranges used late at night, would have given grounds for refusal.

Mr Tomlin would not say that he supported Friends of Basildon Golf Course, which has taken the council to the Court of Appeal over the decision, but said he was now taking a keen interest in the issue.

He previously admitted to having concerns about the decision, but had never gone as far as saying he made the wrong choice until now.

He spoke out after the Echo revealed council leader Tony Ball had put plans on hold to lend £60,000 to Basildon Golf Centre after the campaign group raised concerns about the limited company’s finances.

Mr Tomlin said: “I am pleased Mr Ball has agreed to take a fresh look at this and we will see what this leads to.”

I wonder if Mr Tomlin is up for re-election next year.

This is just the tip of the iceberg (or should I say the tip of the 20 foot mountain of building waste?) In the weeks ahead it will become clear that there were many other things that the committee were not told. For example National policy in Planning Policy Guidance 2 indicates that engineering and other operations, and the making of any material change in the use of land, are inappropriate development unless they maintain openness and do not conflict with the purposes of including land in the Green Belt.

Keep asking the questions Frank!

It takes alot for a man to admit he is wrong - especially a councillor!! Hats off to him. The whole golf course fiasco stank to high heaven from day one.

Whatever we all think about Councillors, I worked with Frank Tomlin for years and he is a good man.

Whats the odds that the developer will pull away from the project and leave the rate-payers to pick up the bill.

I have great admiration for Councillor Frank Tomlin to have the courage to admit he was wrong in agreeing to pass the planning application for Basildon Golf Course by the Jack Barker Group. It just seems a great pity that other members of the Planning Committee who made the same decision have not admitted that they too were wrong in agreeing to such "vandalism"of our beautiful Golf Course. To replace hundreds of trees with twenty foot high bunds of spoil is sheer madness and to build a driving range within a few yards of people's homes is outrageous!!

Cllr Tomlin had the same information as everyone else on the committee. Cllr Tomlin concluded that it was acceptable to dump waste on the golf course and destroy trees and wildlife when doing so. The damage caused will be devasting.

It was obvious to anyone at the meeting that the Tories including Cllr Tomlin were under instructions to vote for the planning application as the tory group wanted to and still want to privatise the golf course.

Labour councillors did not vote for the application as they could see it for what it was. There is no new evidence with regard to the devastation that will be caused by this application it was evident and made clear during the planning application. Cllr Tomlin can say what he likes now when it mattered he spoke for the application and voted the same way.

Well done for admitting you were wrong, lets hope your colleagues follow suit shortly before the golf course is ruined for ever. If we have to have spoil dumped in our area why can't it go alongside Nevendon Road and Golden Jubilee Way which would help with noise and screening the homes there - perhaps its too near some Councillors for comfort!
