AN MP has suggested traffic lights should be turned off in a new pilot scheme to save energy and improve travel.
John Baron has called for the Government to allow the trial in the early hours of the morning.
Under the scheme, traffic lights would be replaced with a slow flashing amber light warning motorists to drive carefully.
The Government has told Mr Baron current regulations mean Essex County Council would not be allowed to trial such a scheme.
But Mr Baron claimed it would mean less pollution and quicker journey times.
He said: “Replacing traffic lights with a slow flashing amber light during the early hours would not only reduce our carbon footprint by saving electricity and the brakes, tyres and fuel of cars, but would also speed journey times.
“People rightly question motives given bureaucracy such as this and the congestion at the Dartford Crossing because of tolls.”

The Germans turn off many of their traffic lights during off-peak periods, so why can't we?
