School steps back in time for 50th birthday

CREATIVE pupils put on a spectacular showcase of dance, art and music to mark their school’s 50th birthday.

Youngsters at Woodlands School, in Basildon, spent several months preparing for their festival to celebrate the landmark anniversary.

All this week, parents have been visiting the school, in Takeley End, to see pupils’ work, look at exhibitions, watch a musical showcase and learn about the school’s history.

Deputy headteacher Alan Morgan praised the efforts of the 11 to 16 year olds, and spoke of his pride in their talents.

He added “The festival has been amazing. We’ve had so much going on.

“Out art department created a series of teriffic iconic images from the past five decades, including Twiggy, Mary Quant and even the Muppets.

“We had a fashion show, where the models came bursting out of a giant Rubik’s Cube, a song and dance showcase with classic hits from the ages, several art exhibitions and loads more.

“Language students created a news report on the fall of the Berlin wall, which they narrated in German.

“One of out former pupils, Jack Norris, 19, who is now studying animation at university, even created an animation of Woodlands being built, which was incredible.

“In addition, we had eleven former pupils come to the school who were here when Woodlands first opened its doors. They recorded their memories for pupils of today and their parents to watch.

Mr Morgan, added: “I am extremely proud of all the pupils and staff for their efforts in making this an anniversary to remember.”
