Southend announces 3.95% tax bill rise

LEADING councillors have approved a council tax rise of 3.95 per cent for Southend householders.

Southend Council’s Tory cabinet approved the budget for the 2010/11 financial year, which included the council tax rise equivalent to an extra £43 a year for a band D property.

The council is trying to save £5.8million by cutting jobs at the council and running the authority in a more cost-effective way.

A net loss of 38 posts out of the 2,200 staff working for Southend is planned, but this would be through staff leaving and retiring, and not compulsory redundancies.

Car parking charges will be frozen to help beleaguered traders, while the council is planning to increase cash for social services, sea defences, day-to-day road repairs and grants for voluntary groups.

Tory leader Nigel Holdcroft said: “Whatever colour of Government we face later this year, local government will face difficult and financially tight years.

“What we have here is a financially sound budget to take us through this.”

But opposition leaders from the Lib Dem, Independent and Labour groups criticised the budget for its above-inflation council tax rise.

The national average increase for 2010 is only 3.5 percent.

Would Nigel Holdcroft care to comment?

Here is how Band D council tax has risen over the years, with the actual figures you have to pay, the percentage increase over the previous year, and (in brackets) the rate of inflation to December in that year.
.
2004 £941.89
2005 £1,014.19 7.68% (3%)
2006 £1,065.51 5.06% (2.80%)
2007 £1,117.52 4.88% (3.20%)
2008 £1,171.70 4.85% (4.30%)
2009 £1,229.07 4.90% (4%)
2010 £1,278.72 4.04% (3% Estimate)
.
Who is creaming off the little bit extra each year, over and above inflation?
.
The current "buzzword" is SUSTAINABLE. Above inflation increases every year are not sustainable. Eventually compounding the increases will send us all skint.
.
Does the 2,200 staff include or exclude renaissance and all the other consultants who are paid regularly and rely on southend council for their wages?.
.
Spend the council tax locally. Use local businesses and tradesmen to provide the goods and services you require. Keep the money in the borough.

Wow, £43, that's gonna put me out on the street... not! From what I can work out from reading more in depth, central government hasn't given as much cash to the council this year as they did last year. I guess the money has got to come from somewhere. Bravo Labour - tut!

Regardless of who is in power in Westminster, history tells us that they look after councils that are the same political colour as them. After the elections I wonder if we will end up with a tory government and a labour council, and get stuffed for another 5 years.
