Updated: Deeping underpass to close

THE closure of the Deeping entrance to Southchurch Road from the Victoria Circus roundabout has been delayed by a week.

The Deeping was due to close permanently from Monday, February 15 but will now close on the evening of Sunday, February 21.

The closure is to enable road improvements which are part of a £25m investment programme.

More than £7 million is being invested to replace the roundabout with a traffic light junction and create a new green public space linking Southend Victoria station with the town centre.

Until the works have been completed access to Chichester Road and Southchurch Road (including the Victoria and Essex Street car parks) will be via the Queensway House roundabout.

All that money that was spent on refurbing it only a year or two back.
.
Anna, you gonna keep a low profile on this one?

Now it's even harder to get into Southend

You just could not make this up. Brian Rix would've been perfect for the role as Council Leader in the farce called, The Umpteenth Day We Dropped Another Clanger!

So the 15th is 'G' day - GRIDLOCK day.
Anna - let me get this right - you want an entrance to the town so you close the one road that leads straight to the town centre!! How will that work then???

Bonkers to shut this access from Victoria Circus Roundabout into the town centre. What great master plan will they come up with next? Southend roads have been a huge joke ever since the ring road was half built. Think of all that money on road schemes that's been wasted and about to be wasted in re-inventing thsi wheel.

If you change the word "invested" to "wasted" the article makes perfect sense.

They'll spend thousands re-opening the deeping at a guess but with this lot - who knows??? A raised road over Vic Circus?

I think its time to consider shopping in Chelmsford or Lakeside, it will be a lot easier than Southend in the future.

This is just plain stupid.

When the underpass was closed my travel time to work was doubled and now it is being closed full time. I honestly can't see how these people get to the positions they are in and more to the point, how on earth do they stay there?

By closing the underpass you are going to be forcing traffic either through residential areas so they can get into the town from the lower end of the high street or forcing them through Southchurch Road.

I wonder how many people might start taking a short cut through the bus only lane/lights opposite the old B&Q building....

I can't tell you how fed up I am with Anna Waite and her ill thought out ideas.

The Deeping, Cuckoo Corner..........have you seen what she is doing at Progress Road ?

Somebody please tell this Council that 3 lanes merging into 2 does not work and never will.

Rush hour will be horrendous coming into Southend. I hope the Tories get a real kicking at the local elections this year.

And don't start me on the suject of what has been done to Gunners Park by this lot !!

Is this why trees are being cut down ? They can't start work on this juntion until they have resurfaced it and relined it . Look at Progress road.
Or will the project be possiblly be stopped because the Waite failed to consult certain parties and then the blame can be placed on them as the british horse soceity is being blamed at progress road because it was forgotten to put in a horse crossing.
What happend to the chicken that lived on Victoria roundabout ?

The Deeping, once closed, could be used for council meetings. The hot air thus generated could drive a turbine which would power the Victoria Plaza and all the new traffic lights needed.

I'll ask the same question that I asked before.
Has anyone yet seen a proper set of plans for this scheme, or any of the others associated with this project, rather than just airy 'artists' impressions'?

It all seems to be being kept well under wraps with just little dribs and drabs of info being released as and when the powers that be decide, and when it's too late to stop them.

They don't want you to know what's going on.

I think you've got it dead right Nebs, just remember everyone, May is coming and with May come elections..........

How many of you are willing to be taken for idiots any longer because that's obviously what our current crop of incompetents think we are.

If the underpass was not already there, the council would want to put one in to improve access to the town. Ok last one out.
