RESIDENTS can spend a penny at new public toilets on Southend seafront next month.
The toilets, funded by the Changing Places Scheme, will open at the end of April and will be opposite Chalkwell Avenue, utilising the existing Chalkwell Esplanade shelter.
There will be four unisex cubicles, including a fully accessible disabled toilet and a lifting hoist.
There will also be a shower and seating outside. This means there will be ten public toilets between Leigh and Shoebury.
Southend councillor responsible for public protection and waste, Ian Robertson, said: “This facility will allow the whole community to access the beach and seafront knowing they have first class toilets available to them.
“The building will tie in with our commitment to helping the environment, as it will incorporate energy saving devices, such as light sensors and water-saving hand-washing units.
“The external seating will also be made from recycled materials, so the whole structure will be as eco-friendly as we can make it.”
