Southend police allay residents' drug fears

POLICE have moved to reassure the public there isn’t a drugs problem in an area of Southend.

Shopowners had called for more officers to be deployed in Southchurch Road, because of worries about dealers operating there and antisocial behaviour.

The issue was raised at a meeting of the Milton Neighbourhood Action Panel leading police to set it as a priority to tackle over the next two months.

But PC Stan Ferris, neighbourhood specialist officer for Milton, said no recent drug offences had taken place and crime in general had fallen by 9.4 per cent.

There were 765 incidents reported bet- ween November 2008 and January 2009, down to 693 in the same period this year.

PC Ferris said: “In February there were no drug crimes reported to the police, and there’s nobody convicted of any crime in relation to drugs on the streets. We have done some drugs raids, one in particular in Holland Road, where four people were arrested and are on bail.”

Sgt Paul Ahmed, of Southend Central’s neighbourhood policing team, said uniformed officers had not spotted any drug-related problems, but they needed residents to call if they see anything suspicious themselves.

He said: “We are very keen to deal with any drug-related issues, but we need to know, and need the public’s support.”

What a relief! And there'll be no violent crime either, no vandalism, no graffiti, no anti-social behaviour, no litter and no yobs drinking in the streets. We must have been imagining it!

Well, we might as well make all the police redundant as there is no crime left for them to solve. Utopia has arrived, and it is Southend. Well done to the new Chief Constable - only been in post 6 months and all the drug problems have been cleared up. I suppose the new drug clinic won't open now, as it won't be needed.
.
Nobody is convicted because if you catch someone with drugs you give them a warning and send them on their way. Easiest way to get your crime solving rates up. Some of us have read the British Crime Survey; we know how you deal with druggies (or not, as the case may be).

Car park rowdies making lives of residents a misery.
Large groups of youngsters gather there to smoke cannabis, scrawl graffiti on the walls, and screech around in their cars at all hours. … She said: “I have to phone the police every night."

What a load of **** - maybe if the Police were to get out of their nice warm cars and invstigate they would find a thriving drug culture - it's not going to happen is it? What fluffy world do they live in?

Hmmm no drugs problem in Southend huh....ok so the recent firearms operation in Sutton Road had nothing to do with the drug gangs coming here from London, sorry I must have read the article wrong!!!
What do they take us for, Southend, like many other towns, has a very obvious drug problem and has had for years. If there is no drug problem then why bother to allow a needle exhange center off the high street!!
But then, us residents, what do we know, we just live here eh!!!!

Read the article properly, the Police aren't saying there isn't a drugs problem in Southend. They are saying a particular area, Southchurch Road, has had no recent drug offences and that in general crime has fallen in the area.

This isn't to say that drug offences don't take place elsewhere in the area, as it has been highlighted by the Police themselves that there is a problem with Somalian drug dealers in the town.

Much of the drug problem in Southend take place behind closed doors, not on the street in broad daylight. As the Police say if people know something or have a specific concern then it needs to be reported to them.

Drug related incidents are down because no body rings the fizzies any more ( we want a cop pounding the beat during the twlight hours, plainclothes if you really want effective action)and all we have on the street are pcso (professional tea drinkers) who nobody bothers going near because they are useless
Where is the beat bobby who would walk Southchurch road and pop into each and every shop and enquire whats actually happening on the ground
Drug dealing often spotted car park next to Tesco metro also, just look 4 sweaty spotty scrawny types hanging around street corners stuck to mobiles wearing hoodies & coats in the hot weather also toilets next to Library. Personally I have seen a 1c3 male 20's on a mountain bike dealing his wares
