Homeless man arrested for having knife in Southend High Street

A HOMELESS man has been arrested on suspicion of having a kitchen knife about in Southend High Street.

It is believed the 46-year-old was sitting on a bench near Jessops camera shop at about 3pm using the knife to open something when he was picked up on CCTV.

Officers then arrived and arrested him on suspicion of possession of an offensive weapon.

I'm lost on this one as several shops in the High Street sell knives, so whats the point of selling them if you can't have them? I hope he wasn't hurt as some police go in very hard and living on the streets through a Winter like the one we had can't be much fun.

he was only opening something for goodness sake! why don't you try arresting burglars and other scum, not an inocent homeless guy.

Having a knife out in the open is illegal and considered a weapon I guess, no matter the circumstances (otherwise, all the muggers will keep a can of beans with them at all times, what an excuse!)

Suppose it was different if the homeless guy was jumping over a fence or something....

Police don't always arrest the wrong people - your logic = failure.

The laws the law, its an offence to carry an offensive weapon. The exact circumstances aren't reported so the guy could have done something that tipped the balance and meant he had to be arrested. Likewise, I would question even he was just using it to open something that sitting on a bench in the middle of a busy high-street with a knife isnt a good idea and needs challenging.
