Power plant at Coryton will have minimal emissions, says energy company

CONCERNS have been raised that a new £600million natural gas power station could cause pollution in Castle Point.

The Gateway Energy Centre, a 900-megawatt natural gas-fired power station, is planned for previously developed land on the north bank of the River Thames at Coryton, near Corringham.

The site is less than a mile away from the existing gas fired power station on the border of the two local authority areas.

Julian Ware-Lane, prospective Labour MP for Castle Point, said: “Throughout the year, the prevailing winds are from the west 70 per cent of the time – this means any airborne pollution will, for that 70 per cent of any normal year, be carried into Castle Point.

Thurrock will benefit from the development; Castle Point could get the pollution.”

The power station would meet all the energy demands of the new superport being created, as well as powering a million homes across Basildon and Thurrock.

InterGen, the company behind the power station, must gain Government approval for the scheme.

Mr Ware-Lane is keen Castle Point Council is consulted on the plans.

He said: “I am aware that in the previous decade we had a refinery closed in this area, but that is no reason to accept new unwanted sources of pollution without putting up some comment.”

A meeting between InterGen, the company behind the proposals, and Castle Point Council is due to take place next month Bosses at InterGen say the power station would be one of the most efficient and environmentally advanced in the UK and promise it will bring benefits to the wider area, not just Thurrock.

Spokeswoman Melissa McKerrow said: “InterGen recognises that naturally, the community may have concerns about emissions from the proposed Gateway Energy Centre.

“The state-of-the-art technology used in constructing the plant will result in minimal emissions and preserve local air quality. Once the plant is operational, emissions from the stacks will be continuously monitored by specialised emissions monitoring equipment and reported to the Environment Agency on a regular basis.

“The proposed Gateway Energy Centre will bring benefits, not just to Thurrock, but to the entire region, with up to 600 jobs created during construction and 60 long-term direct and indirect jobs once the plant is operational.”

So what will Castle Point get from this new Power station?
Cheaper Electriclty?
Any worse emissions than the old Power Station ? ask the questions it may actually reduce pollution in Castle Point.
How about if we ask for a connecting road from Canvey to the roundabout by the Mobile Club as I understand it the biggest obsticle of this 3rd route off the Island is Thurock Council objecting to it.
Do a Deal and sort out on of Castle Points biggest issues and make Canvey a safer place to live.

To all the concerned anoraks worried about Nuclear power plants etc despite the fact most Nuclear plants in France are nearer to this area than Wales or Scotland.

And the fact that this rotten Government have dragged their feet over a looming power crisis for this country over the past 12 years because many of their supporters are anti anything as this twit of a prospective MP is thank God at last the Conservative Party have laid their cards on the table and stated that they will allow PRIVATE ENTERPRISE to build 1 power station per month including Nuclear if necessary which will fend off a total disaster with pending civil unrest.

We need to modernise and go forward not listen to all the Left wing anoraks and supporters of the New labour anorak club.

Labour are killing us!!

Yeah Maggie's principles really helped us with "The Dash for Gas", closure of Coal Mines, etc..(We had 300 years supply of coal), now we are at the mercy of the Russians and their stranglehold on natural gas..

Our power industry is now owned by the French government! (EDF stands for Electricite' De France).

As for Private Enterprise, yeah that worked with the Banks didn't it?? After all letting the market decide was a success there. Unless like Evilc, our very own tame idiot, when he wants unregulated things but when it goes wrong blames the Government and says they should regulate it.

Still we get to hear his worthless rants about law and order breaking down over the Jamie Bulger murder, (Which actually occurred under the Conservative Government.)

And that build a nuclear power station just has to be a vote winner, especially if it's in evilc's back garden.

Sometimes I wonder if giving care in the community cases a computer and internet is just a step too far?

Good old Maggie, eh? The Iron Lady. More like a blasted tin-pot dictator - a rabid one, at that! Private Enterprise? Don't make me laugh...the list of companies that your precious fascists sold-off to all and sundry, is nothing short of criminal. We have been well and truly paying for Thatcher's demented dictat for years and will be, forever more. Consider this; all the profits that the State-owned companies made (huge profits, bar BL) went into the Treasury, NOT, foreign share-holders Swiss Bank accounts, as they have done since that creature sold it all for pennies.

Well said!!!!

Only problem is that the care in the community wing of the Union of British Fascists don't like to hear the truth.

You know that selling off companies that make huge profits to Maggie's mates was selling the country down the river....EVen ex tory Prime Ministers said it "was selling the family silver".

Selling off British Telecom, TSB (Which technically wasn't owned by the Gov't. but that didn't stop them), British Gas, the Electricity companies, British Petroleum etc etc. How many billions was lost evilc?

The above anti comments are similar to those made by the former communist party members before the fall of the iron curtain, or the fall of the communist Arthur Scargill.

If we remain with the Bring back the Union agitators brigade then we will become a third world country.

We need new revolutionary thinking to encourage private enterprise in a free economy, that will either work free of Government subsidies or fail.

We do not want to produce coal that is more expensive to produce than it is worth.

Private enterprise is the only way forward at this point in History.

Everyone given the chance to improve their lot NOT JUST THE PARTY MEMBERS.

Profits made will then go in taxes and feed the ever growing Public employees who do not generate wealth, it will go on ever increasing benefits that again only take, take, take eventually we will have a stagnant country with a small minority paying for a communist type society.
That is the policy of the 1940's and behind the Iron curtain THAT FAILED!!

Do you want that?

Its time for a change Labour have had 12 years and we are bankrupt.

Buffalo Bill says...

You really are an idiot evilc, if you had an iota of intelligence you would know that:

We are not bankrupt, we have a AAA credit rating.

Borrowing figures released yesterday show that borrowing is far less than forecast.

I suggest you read some history, Labour was in power from 1945, it was a national unity government led by the Conservaive, liberal, conservative (or whatever he was), half american hero of the Conservative party who was in power for 50% of the 40s. When WW2 ended the country was far closer to bankrupt than at any time since. (238% of GDP after Churchil lvoted out)

The current level is close to 70% with the most austere predictions saying it will probably peak at arround 100% within the next few years. To put the debt crisis into some sort of perspective Japan is currently in dept to the tune of 200% and Italy is currently over 100%. It is predicted that Germany too will bust the 100% level along with the UK.

Unlike previous periods of large national debt the government have actually spent the money investing in the public services, property and financial markets. This investment spending should help the country to recover its debt faster.

Beware of those who paint a picture that is all doom and gloom, they may have an obvious motive for doing so

As for coal, you do understand that we were self sufficient in energy but now rely on other countries, who can turn the supply off whenever they want?

Private enterprise IS a GOOD thing but social responsibility is also required. For an example of what happens when private enterprise is allowed to do as it likes, just look at the banks! Ironically once private enterprise failed, they all wanted the state to bail them out!

Vote for CAMORON at your peril
Don’t you remember the huge NHS waiting lists, failing schools, the constant boom and bust economy, huge interest rates, the pound forced out of the ERM, unemployment at 3,000,000, and over 1,000,000 home owners forced into re-possession?

On top of all that was Tory sleaze. A continual stream of press stories regarding the private lives of Conservative MPs and ministers, several of whom were forced to resign. Sex scandals, affairs, drink driving as well as sleaze involving huge financial deals. Stuff that makes the current MP expenses stuff look miniscule.

So carry on taking the medicine and stop talking so much twaddle and crop! (SIC)

I can just imagine you and the other Maggie knocks, either ex coal miners, or pole tax decenter s.
And now you turn a blind eye to Tony Blair/Gorden Brown, the first killed over 600000 Iraqi civilians, not too mention the America and English troops, which cost us billions and now gets £2 million from a Iraqi oil company and another million as peace envoy!!.
The other has put us so far in debt we will never recover in our life times.
And the unions are smelling blood so the strike season is upon us.
Come on you Maggie moaners who would you put back in power
