Almost 100 cars broken into in Shoebury

THIEVES have ransacked almost 100 cars in Shoebury in the last two months.

Police are urging people to be more security-conscious because 63 of the cars broken into between March 9 and May 9 this year had been left unlocked. They have had sat navs stolen along with a host of personal items.

Pc Paul Hanson, a neighbourhood specialist officer for Shoebury, said 98 cars had been targeted over that period.

He said: “It is astonishing that almost two-thirds of the thefts from cars we’ve seen in this area are from cars that had been left insecure.

“It’s clear that we need to continue drumming home our message in order to educate motorists into making their vehicles less of a target to thieves.

Anyone with information about vehicle crimes in the Shoebury and Southchurch areas should call police on 0300 3334444 or the local neighbourhood policing team on their mobile 07710 086590.

If a car wasn't locked, was it "broken-into"?

I returend some bags to a neighbour of mine who had had his vehicle broken into, and Satnav nicked. He would not even report the crime to the police. Perhaps the 98 is an underestimate.

We are about due for the monthly press release from the Chief Constable, or one of his oppo's, telling us how well they have done, and how crime is reducing.

Whilst I have no patience with any thieves of any type, surely if one doesn't lock the car door, one is asking for trouble. Why not place a sign in the window inviting them in; it's almost as stupid.

This has happened to me last week, I make sure I lock my car as I leave my buggy in there etc, I went to my car in the morning and my car door was open, CDs all over the place and my glove box open. They hadn't taken anything and there was no sign of forced entry. The same thing happened to a friend of mine and again nothing was taken. I think they are getting into locked cars somehow and disabling the alarm system. I'm sure there can't be that many people about that don't lock there cars!
