MORE than 100 jobs will be created when a discount department store opens its doors in Southend next month.
TJ Hughes has announced it’s opening a new 22,000 sq ft store at the old Woolworths site in the High Street.
The Liverpool-based company has invested almost £3million in the two-storey shop.
Chris McKeown, sales director for the company, said: “We are delighted to confirm we are opening a new store in August and we are in the middle of the refit.
“We are certain the people of Southend will enjoy shopping at TJ Hughes. We are the UK’s only discount department store, with a wide range of products across home, textiles, beauty & fragrance, menswear, lingerie, toys and electrical.”
The shop, in High Street, has been empty since December 2008, when Woolworths went into administration.
Ian Robertson, councillor responsible for enterprise, tourism and regeneration, welcomed the new store.
He said: “This is just the sort of thing we want in the town. This is really good news for Southend.
“We are working all the time to attract potential investors for Southend, but these things take time. There are some successes, as this testifies.
“We need to give them a warm welcome to the town and hope that they attract other business to come here as well.”
Both the ground and first floor will be used, with escalators installed between the levels. Work will also be carried out to the outside of the building

I read in one of their missives that they speak for "The people in Southend that don't have a voice." They certainly don't speak for me, I disagree with most of their "wider ranging" aims and the ferocity of the council-bashing they commit. Fair play, some things could be done better, but at least they're doing something, rather than leaving the place to rot.

They will protest about anything that will not fit in with their view of a tree coverd Southend, read somewhere (cant remember where) that the reason the have branched out to protest everything that the council want to do is because of public demand!
This museum they want to build will destroy a scheduled ancient monument that is within the Parks Department compound.
So no jobs, no investment but a small museum that lacks parking public transport and will devistate the park they want to protect...
We are still waiting to see the full plans for what they want to do.

i wonder how many of these jobs were given to local folk who are born in the uk, or is it all eastern european workforce?

As a former manager of Woolworths Southend, I am pleased to see the old place up and running again. However, knowing how run down the place was I am surprised it only cost them £3 million to renovate it. And how ironic that they are opening up the first floor again 20 years after Woolies closed it down and ripped out the escalators! Good luck to them!

Hmmmmmmmmm. Looks like a whole new shoplifting experience beckons the scum that frequents Southend high street. I imagine they are polishing up their skills as we post!!

I can see your friends who most likely come round and play sometimes totally agree with your views ; I just wonder do the dolls?
I remember when the first floor was open, always was first port of call the Toy section to see what new goodies were of offer.
Loved the huge line of Tome Zoids they always had in, crazy thing is still got them all decades on, a couple are still in sealed boxies!

As for the eastern europeans soul man, they are just as much entitled to work here, as you are there. Part of the EU, remember??
