A protest group will march through Canvey on Sunday in an effort to raise awareness about the storage of liquified natural gas on the island.

People Against Methane (PAM) are to stage a march along Long Road and Thames Road before setting up a picnic in Concord car park, opposite the Calor Gas terminal.

The owners of the gas terminal want to switch it from storing liquified petroleum gas, to holding 5 per cent of the country's LNG supplies.

This weekend will mark the first demonstration the group has held since its formation.

It is encouraging local residents to join them on the march.

Irene Willis, of PAM, said: "This is the first demonstration the People Against Methane have held.

"We hope it will be the first of many and will enable the people of Canvey to gather as a community and show we do not want these terminals expanded.

"In fact, we think that in view of Buncefield, they should probably be removed."

The march will begin at 12.30pm from the Paddocks Community Centre, in Long Road, before protesters make their way down to Thames Road and setting up a picnic at about 1.30pm.

Anyone wishing to join the march is asked to wear something lime green, if possible.
