Headache for drivers on A127 at Progress Road

MOTORISTS say changing the sequence of traffic lights at a busy road junction in Southend is making delays and congestion even worse.

Southend Council road works were already causing delays at the A127 Progress Road junction, but motorists claim hold-ups are now far worse because the timing of the lights has been altered.

They fear the problem will only get worse when the schools reopen, putting even more traffic on the roads next week.

Southend businessman Paul van Looy said: “During the day, it took me more than 25 minutes to get from Rayleigh Weir to Progress Road.

“What makes the situation worse at Progress Road is not seeing anybody working there when you eventually get to the traffic lights.”

The road at the busy junction is being widened to improve traffic flows – which is expected to continue until next March.

Essex County Council said it was trying to ensure other routes remained clear.

A spokesman added: “We are working with Southend Council to ensure any disruption is kept to a minimum.”

Southend councillor responsible for transport and planning, Mark Flewitt, said: “We have investigated these reported issues and there are no reasons why the Progress Road scheme should be affecting traffic.

“There are no faults we are aware of at present with the signals. It is likely that the recent queuing maybe the result of traffic volumes for the last few days of the holidays and fine weather.

“We are running narrow lanes, but both lanes are open to traffic. We are constantly monitoring the situation.”

The only new delay at Progress road is after 8 in the evening when it goes down to one lane - which is a bit of a mare. I have not seen experienced any new delays in the day time so not sure what the complaint is? The biggest traffic pain at present is the gas works at Eastern Avenue/Sutton road which is causing stupid delays from Cuckoo corner. Ho hum....

By causing these jams now, the council will be able to tell you how much better the new system is when all the works have been completed. And you will believe them.
Then, when all the extra traffic for the airport arrives in a few years, it will be worse than ever and have to be done again.

You are correct sitting on it right now. If I get a train does that mean I'm never allowed to drive or talk to people that drive

the answer is very simple
everyhing works great until horses arrive to cross. The horses go througth the juntion and the lights turn against them but most motorist are sensible and allow the horses to carry on . The ligth sensors because the cars have not moved think there is a problem and reset to a safe mode.
The poeple who should be watching have gone home so the lights are not reset until they came back to work.
A line of cyclist from the cycling centre in progress road do the same
Thats why its so important for a horse cyclist crossing to be installed so when the juntion is finished the traffic is not held up, A simple solution to hard for southend councillors to work out
