12 arrested in police road blitz

TWELVE people were arrested and more than 40 vehicles taken off the roads during a police blitz in Thurrock.

Officers carried out Operation Battle to clampdown on motoring offences and travelling criminals.

Stop checks and number plate recognition cameras made sure drivers were abiding by the law during the operation, on roads around the Thurrock Moto services and the Dartford river crossing.

Hogg Lane, the Orsett Cock roundabout, Tilbury docks and the A1306 in South Ockendon, were also targeted.

As a result, a dozen people were arrested for offences ranging from theft and burglary, to being disqualified from driving.

Some 40 vehicles were seized after drivers were found to have no driving licence or no insurance.

A total of 30 fines were dished out for traffic offences, while nine vehicles were searched for drugs.

Thurrock district commander, Chief Insp Paul Moor, said the operation had been such a success, it would be running again soon. He added: “Building on the successes of Operation Battle, we are going to continue running more of these operations. “They provide community reassurance, while at the same time significantly impacting on those wishing to commit crime in Thurrock.”

A good start (but the tip of an iceberg).
This should be a Daily happening not a once a year occurrence.
This only proves getting out there and doing your job gets results - sitting in an cosy office looking at figures achieves nothing.
Please don't now tell us you need a month to process the paperwork

if the police do this everyday in Essex, Basildon, Wickford and surrounding areas the roads will be safer for us who have licenses and have road tax and insurance and it will get those scumbags who dont OFF the road.

Completely agree with the above comments. Forty vehicles seized in just one day for driving licence &/or insurance offences proves the need.

I afraid to say that although the this does sound impressive, the figures that are documented are from at least 2 operations that I know off to combat the boy racer's. One of these was operation Wagtail that was recently mentioned on Police Interceptor’s. The Wagtail operation was carried out over 4 consecutive weeks in the Lakeside area totalling approximately 16 hours of police time to combat the boy racer problem in the Lakeside area. Unfortunately the police are putting pressure on Thurrock Council to lay speed humps within this area to hopefully push the boy racer problem out of this area, which only inflicts the problem of dangerous driver’s still being at large on the surrounding area’s. As residents of Thurrock already pay for policing within our Council Tax my opinion is why are we are then expected to fork out over £20’000 for sleeping police men (excuse the pun), when cuts are constantly being mentioned. I agree with Paul Moor’s comments that the public do need reassuring but find this write up is very misleading as the problem has been going on for 5 years and feel this should have been addressed sooner. Which has only allowed the amount of racer’s/dangerous driver’s coming into the area escalating.
