Southend Airport hotel given go ahead

SOUTHEND Airport has been given the thumbs up to build a new 129 bedroom hotel.

Southend Council's development control committee has today approved the plan for the hotel on land adjacent to the Harp House Roundabout.

The hotel will include a restaurant and bar areas and conference facilities with a separate restaurant on the top floor with views overlooking the airport.

Great news!
More jobs for the area, despite what the anti-anything groups say.

Happy to see renewal of the airport but another hotel? We have strawberry fields,The Palace, the travellodge and I thought they were going to build one by the old gas jetty, one where the esplanade pub is and one earmarked for the new footie stadium as well as a possible down Vic Avenue -where are the massed hordes of visitors going to come from?

I would hardly class Strawberry Fields or the Travellodge in the same league as the proposed hotel.

Trouble is apart from the top managers they won’t be going to anyone other than eastern europeans

Regular visitors to other hotels may well agree, eh?

This is really good news for Southend. When travelling on Business this is the type of hotel that people want to stay in. I travel on Businees quite a lot and can't think of any decent business type hotels in Southend. We avoid having any conferences or meetings in Southend due to the lack of a decent hotel and decent transport links. Hopefully with the airport and a decent hotel it will be easier to bring top businessman to Southend for conferences, and with luck this may encourage some much needed businesses to locate to Southend. The company I worked for left Southend as it was an embarrasingly difficult place to get people to and once there, there was nowhere to stay.

You can add any so called jobs at the airport to that comment.

What rubbish. If local people want the jobs as with any company in the town, then it's up to them to apply for them along with anyone else from outside the area.
If local people are too proud to take the lower paid unskilled jobs, then that's upto them. Good luck to the Eastern Europeans or other nationalities that aren't too proud to work for a living.
Vanilla as usual an educated response. How many Eastern Europeans work at the airport now?

Quite right. Eastern Europeans will only take jobs if locals are too lazy to get off their arses and apply themselves.

vanilla ice: You clearly do not agree with the airport expanding the services it operates so I expect you will never use it if you fly off on holiday or for work (if you work) or are you one of those people that think its fine and hunky dory to fly over somebodys house but the second somebody want to fly over yours its wrong and should not be permitted to happen?

ethel.I already work at a company based at the airport and a lot of our customers need hotels to stop in ,we often encounter problems with no rooms at the inn ,so another one will be good to bridge this short fall, but the plus of also giving employment to more locals, this to me is a win win situation. Bring it on..........

Um... We are not in Stratford, and suspect the Olympic development is slightly larger with several hundred contractor companies working on site.
Eastern Europeans don't have a back door employment agency, if you have better skills and/or experience or qualifications and apply for the same job you should get the opportunity in whatever that maybe. Like it or not, if they are from an EU country they have as much right to that job as you.
But thats a different story.

Don't believe everything you read in the Tabloids. They are not taking all our jobs.

If the new hotel lives up to its expectations, it will provide not only bedrooms but a nice bar and restaurant. Not everybody wants a "two for £9.99" meal in a pub, but some seek comfort and something a bit more special for their leisure. The new hotel image I saw looks great, and will support it whenever I can, although I do hope they give priority to locals for work, rather than the Eastern Europeans, who are often taken on for £4 an hour as cheap labour. I recently stayed at a nice hotel in Dusseldorf, but the reception staff were from Bulgaria and I didnt understand a word!
