YOUTH nuisance plummeted by 43 per cent in Shoebury over the summer holidays.

Police had set up Operation Carnival to increase patrols around the troubled Four Rivers Estate while children were off school.

Officers also focused on Shoebury East Beach, Maplin Way, Shoebury Park and Friars Park, where youngsters tended to congregate in large groups.

This was backed up by Operation New World, which saw officers seize more than 80 cans of booze from underage drinkers.

As a result, police received 85 calls about rowdy teenagers in Shoebury between July 21 and September 2. This compares with 149 during the same period last year.

Sgt Ian Hughes, of Shoebury neighbourhood policing team, said: “We’re really pleased with the effect the operation has had in reducing antisocial behaviour, which has proved a problem in previous years.

“While we’re happy with the reduction, we’re keen to ensure the number of antisocial behaviour calls we receive remains low, so we will continue to work closely with residents and other agencies to maintain the good progress we’ve made here in Shoebury.”

The same operation was run in Southchurch, where the number of calls fell by 14 per cent from 148 to 127.
