Our stolen dog Rolo was just around the corner!

Delighted – Oliver, one, and Katie, three, reunited with Rolo Delighted – Oliver, one, and Katie, three, reunited with Rolo

A DOG believed to have been stolen is back with its family after it was spotted living in another house around the corner.

Rolo, an 11-week-old brown and tan dachshund puppy, is believed to have been taken from the family home in Newington Close, Southend.

But now she’s back after a family friend went along to get the dog home after police said it was not a priority.

Rolo’s owner, Caroline Carter, 22, said: “We are all so happy she’s back with us and when I saw her it was such a relief. I felt a weight lift off of my shoulders.”

The dog was taken between 10.15pm last Saturday and 7.50am on Sunday.

It is thought the thieves opened an unlocked back door during the night and stole the pup, which is worth around £600.

Following a plea for help, the family received an anonymous tip-off from a person who told them the address of where tiny Rolo could be found.

Caroline, a mum-of-two, added: “When we got the phone call from the person telling us where the dog was living, it was just around the corner from us.

“We informed the police about the update, but they said it was not a priority. I was desperate to get Rolo back and one of my friends said he would go round and get her back for us.

“He did it in the right way. He just went to the house and said to the owners, ‘I believe you have my neighbour’s dog and I would like to take her back to them’.

“He was told Rolo was found in a cardboard box and she was going to return her.

“She seems to be all right and she is back to her old self.

“My daughter, Katie, is so happy right now. She is cuddling her and walking round the house with her.”

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “We are pleased Rolo is back with her family. We are continuing to investigate the incident and we are still appealing for more information.”

Anyone with information can call PC Chris Daves at Shoebury police station on 0300 3334444.

I have a new puppy (we took care of it 1 week ago).
It is under constant surveillance and cannot go out for 2-3 weeks before it's jabs.
Not wishing to criticise too harshly BUT, with 2 young kids to keep watch on and a new puppy (god, there a handful), it is probably not advisable to mix the 2 at this stage of their lives.

As for the police reaction....as it isn't one of it's nulabour targets (soon to be abolished, I hope)...then it ain't a crime.

hmmm whats wrong with young children and puppies?
we have just got a shephard puppy (our last shephard past away at the beginning of this month) and i have 4 kids 16,10,8,3
it benefits both the children (by respecting animals) and the dog to be used to children
it isnt rocket science to watch children and dogs

What is wrong with the police? They forced someone to take the law into their own hands and there was a strong possibility of trouble.

Essex police at their best .
If it were me, a letter of complaint would be sent to the Chief Constable CC'd to my MP.

God news of a happy ending however, "Police said it was not a priority".
.
So what is the pecking order? Is it theft that was low down, or the value at £600 too low, or the item stolen to whit one dog. I have read reports of thieves charged with theft of items amounting to just a few pounds, let alone £600.
.
Given that the location of the stolen item was known, a quick visit would have returned the stolen dog and got a tick in the clear up box.
.
Perhaps the paper work is just a pain for a " low priority" matter. Compare this with item in the news of nine (yes NINE) police sent round to harass parents collecting disabled children from school, threatening them with arrest if they didn't "move it".
.
I am normally a supporter of the police, but they are definitely losing it.

...... but sweet to see those children so happy to have Rolo back.

:0)

.... and Rolo looks a real character.

;0)

Puzzling this was not a priority for the police, given the value of the dog.

If one or more of the Children had been taken would the police have treated it more urgently.
Please ALWAYS keep your children, house, car, bike etc safe and secure. There is always someone who will take advantage of an unlocked house/garage/shed.

Naturally the police will have treated it more seriously if it was one of the children.

Missing children is sometimes the reason you see the police helicopter overhead. A school I am connected with (not in this area) recently had an anxious parent report her child was not at the pick up point. This triggered an immediate police response, cars doing the roads, PCSOs doing house to house enquiries. The police helicopter was stood down at the last minute when the parent remembered she had given her daughter permission to go straight from school to a friend's birthday party (doh!)

I agree with your point about keeping everything secure. Won't stop the determined thief but it will deter the opportunists.

I feel for the family in that Rollo is back, but what of the neighbours. To steal the dog in the first place shows their morals, but to live "just round the corner", that is something else. They either don't give a **** who knew of the theft, are incedibly stupid or both.
.
The Carter family have to live with the knowledge that these people are still "just round the corner".

Yes I agree. They might bump into these people while they are out walking Rolo, everyone knowing full well these idiots stole their dog.

Lovely to see the children looking so happy.
