Just who is the phantom Canvey tyre dumper?

A COUNCIL has been urged to use spy powers to help find the now notorious Canvey tyre dumper.

Another 25 tyres have been dumped on the island, this time in Haven Road and near the entrance to a caravan park.

More than 1,000 tyres have been dumped over a series of nights since mid-December, but so far the police and council have failed to catch the culprit.

Jane King, Canvey Island Independent Party councillor for Canvey West, believes Castle Point Council should use any available law to find the person responsible.

She wants CCTV cameras put up under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act to catch the flytipper in the act She said: “It wouldn’t be a permanent fixture, just until we have caught them.

“I think it must be the same people doing it because they keep dumping them in the same areas – the problem is we haven’t got any proof.

“Something must be done, because Canvey shouldn’t be a dumping ground. These tyres are costing the tax payer a fortune to get rid of.”

She added: “Councils have been criticised in the past for using these powers to snoop on people’s bins and things like that.

“Well, this is a legitimate case where they really should use them.”

Elizabeth Swann spotted the latest pile of tyres when she left her home in Haven Road on Monday morning.

She said: “I saw all these tyres on the side of the road, and thought, ‘Oh no, not again’.

“We had the same thing here about a fortnight ago, although that time they left them all scattered down the road. This time they’d been left in a neater pile.”

The tyres have since been cleared away by Castle Point Council.

In all cases, the tyres are believed to have been dumped by someone driving a white Sherpa LDV van.

Police have urged residents who see anything suspicious to call Canvey police on 0300 3334444.

If it's someone coming onto the Island (as some reports have suggested) to dump them, then as there are only two roads on and off of Canvey and both are covered by ANPR cameras then if they are using the same vehicle it should be easy to identify it. Even easier if they know the make of vehicle.
If the police go through the ANPR lists and eliminate the vehicles that are too small to carry the amount of tyres and investigate the suspicious ones, ie a white sherpa (or other vehicle) coming onto Canvey at a similar time to the tyres being dumped and leaving a short time later and returning on other days that the tyres appear.

Goodyear for the dumpers but residents are pumped up by it. The culprits are treading all over them. Still, Jane King won't let them down (apologies if my comment seems a bit flat).

Gather them up and we can have a temporary go-kart track in one of the island's car-parks. The go-kart place up the Village next to the BP garage can provide the vehicles for half hourly rental.....

The only reason these tryes are being dumped is ithe fact that it is cheaper than paying the commercial disposal rates imposed by the authorities. This could be just the thin edge of the wedge. If councils introduce residental waste removal charges as was mooted by outr last government, there will be tyres stacked on top of mountains of bin bags.

The "spying" powers were brought in to deal with terrorists, not fly tippers. If the councillor thinks such powers should be available for minor crimes she should loby parliament for that, not abuse powers given to combat more serious offenses.

Jokes aside, this is a serious problem, although TBH if Canvey just became one big landfill sight not many people would be too disappointed.

This is costing the council lots of money so how about this for a novel idea.

Rather than going to the expense of CCTV cameras, why not set up observation points on Sommes Avenue roundabout and have one or two of the local police officers keep an eye out for vehicles that are large enough to carry lots of tyres during the night who then let another look out at the dumping site know they're on their way.

Surely it's got to be cheaper to do this for a couple of nights rather than keep having to pay for the tyres to be removed and disposed of and/or putting up CCTV?

Perhaps a little too much common sense? After all, we're not allowed to use that any more......

The thing is even if the culprits are caught they cannot be prosecuted for the the recent spate of flytipping as there is no proof they did it. Their argument will be its the first time we have ever doe it.

As for CCTV, London councils often use this method to catch flytippers. Personally if this method is deployed to catch these vandals then they should also encure what it costs to deploy CCTV in any fine dished out.

Sensible suggestion. I agree.

Councils all over the country have proved that they cannot be trusted with these powers so you shouldn't be allowed to use them at all.
~
Why would someone drive all the way onto that sh1tty little island to dump tyres when they could easily dump them anywhere in Basildon, Benfleet etc. Can I suggest that someone looks closer to home - the island is littered with car salvage yards, I wonder what happens to their tyres ?

How about Jane King gets off her lardy arse and stakes out the area herself ..

Then again, when you get new tyres, you are charged a disposal fee on the old ones.
Perhaps some of the smaller outfits are taking this money, but dumping the tyres ?
