A COUNCILLOR says land being eyed up as a relocation site for families from Dale Farm should be turned into allotments.
Tory John Dornan, councillor for Laindon Park, opposes the application for a 12-pitch site on land opposite Laindon Park Primary School, Basildon Road, Laindon.
Mr Dornan said the area, where he roamed as a child, was packed with wildlife and is surprised it does not have green belt status.
He said: “If anything is to be done with the land, other than leave it as it is, it should be turned into allotments.
“There is a shortage of allotments in this part of Basildon.
“It would be the only use that would not be of detriment to the environment.”

It is scandalous that this idea should even be mooted. After all the agravation and expense the so-called G/Ts have caused to the good folks of Basildon district.
The body who owns this land needs investigation as to who has an interest.
The "eviction" which should have taken place months ago has been costed at up to £18M ! Has anyone seen a breakdown of this figure? We have a story in the Echo today BLOCKED AS USUAL which says police are asking for £9.2M to "help police the planned eviction of travellers".
I am convinced that the authorities are using deliberately hyped-up figures to support a growing tendancy to introduce the idea of simply moving the "problem" elsewhere and maybe make a bit of a "backhander" on the side.
If police can be found in vast numbers to attend peaceful marches, protests, royal visits, police helicopters used to follow stolen cars, teenage burglars etc., then they should be readily available at no extra cost to protect and enforce the actions of bailiffs operating as agents for the Crown.
I'm all for the allotment scheme. We'll be needing some cheap grub soon!
