Injunction is served to stop people living on a green belt site

TRAVELLERS have been blocked from moving on to green belt land near a large Wickford gipsy site.

A High Court injunction has been served on one and a half acres of land close to the authorised traveller site in Meadow Lane.

Hardcore and fencing had been laid and officials feared a new site was under construction.

Council officials acted amid fears the land was being prepared as a possible relocation site for some of the 96 or so families facing eviction from Dale Farm in Crays Hill, a few miles away.

A spokesman for Chelmsford Council said: “This was pre-emptive enforcement.

“Our reasons included the laying of hardcore and the erection of fencing, all of which indicated this field was being prepared for the stationing of mobile homes.”

The injunction has been served on Beryl Farrant of Waverley Crescent, Run-well, who bought the land last December for £10,000. She refused to comment. It is also served on Adrian Archer, Mr Archer Junior and persons unknown.

Copies of the injunction, which makes it a criminal offence for anyone to live on the land in a caravan, have been put up around the site.

If it is breached individuals would be held in contempt of court.

The Meadow Lane site has authorised privately-owmed pitches, mostly occupied by English gipsies. In 2005 Chelmsford Council spent £500,000 upgrading the site, after it was expanded without planning permission.

The council decided it was better to authorise the illegal pitches than spend money on an eviction.

Is there no end that these anti social, anti authority people will go to.

If they want their human right to travel i respect that right will then 'fooking travel' and keep travelling because that is one of the very few means we the law abiding folk have of getting any form of taxes from you in fuel duty.

I love how they have spent years trying to evict these travellers, then say they can't go to a specific field because if they do they will be breaching an injunction

Erm, I think we have gathered they don't care about the law

I have great respect for Jon Austin in his relentless battle to enlighten people as to what is (or not) happening over this situation. However this time the first line of his report is a tad optimistic. "Travellers blocked from moving on to green belt" ...Well not exactly.... there is at least an injunction in place to deter them.
*
I think we are all aware by now that G/Ts do not recognise that the law applies to them. They only understand "we want", "we will", "we do" etc. A court order is only as strong as its enforcement. Now that we have the magic word "cost" being brought into the equation the propaganda machine is hard at work working on those short-sighted individuals who swallow the idea that it would be cheaper and less hassle to give-in to the demand to construct more sites so that the "culture" can spread. All this will do of course is to open the gates for more of the bretheren to travel to our shores aided and assisted by English gypsies who are also profiting from sales of land and certain business arrangements. Who in their right mind wants to see further spread of the "culture?" Do we plan to have an ever-increasing number of pitches for itinerants, maintained at our expense but completely unaccountable to authority?
*
In Jon's report it says Chelmsford spent £500K in 2005 "upgrading the site after it was expanded without permission" ..... talk about rewarding crime! Heaven help us if more sites are built or expanded. We will have an increasingly heavy millstone around our necks and a spreading group of outlaws with complete contempt for those subsidising their very existence.

Er Abbey Gale whats wrong with them going back to Ireland? They are Irish citizens and their government should take responsibility for them. Why do you think they have stayed stunningly silent that a huge bunch of their citizens are going to be evicted. Doesn't take Einstein to work it out does it? We have enough problems looking after our own people. Justify to me WHY we should be responsible for Irelands travellers?

Abbey Gale, These people when travelling in thier native Ireland are known as Tinkers. What might be worth you knowing is that the majority have somewhere to live in their native country. That "Somewhere" would make most of the folks houses around here look like a run down travellers site! They have more money than you could imagine, yet draw assistance from us, whilst this accursed right wing government are busy cutting the support for our vunerable people in care homes. You want to see justice? Spend some of your time looking out for our old folk!

How many more times do councils have to continue to keep spending money on stopping these lawbreakers. These people are breaking the law and should have their land confiscated and sold if they do not abide by our country's laws, with the proceeds put back into the community purse. It is ridiculous beyond words and about time that they were stopped. The government needs to get a grip and deal with them in the same way as any other habitual and repetitive criminal. What a cop-out authorising illegal plots, Chelmsford council should be ashamed of themselves.

Keep up the good work Jon Austin your info is brilliant.

GT sympathiser "Abbey Gale" is promoting the same old line dished out by them "where will we go?".....Well I'm sure we could think of a few choice answers to that....
*
I think it would be more relevant to ask where did they come from in the first place? What caused them to hitch up the wagon and nag and travel across the sea from the Emerald Isle?
*
The answer, as I am sure "AbbeyGale" knows is that their own nation became sick to death of their "culture" and decided to take some direct action...which is when opportunists such as Mr. Puxon etc. got involved. The government reacted by changing the law in Ireland making trespass a criminal offence leading to a steady influx of "travellers" aided and supported by gypsy groups in Britain. Instead of instantly following the lead of the Irish goverenment our naive politicians (of all parties!) were persuaded that the G/Ts were a persecuted ethnic minority and therefore something to be cherished and cared-for at the considerable expense of every other ethnic group in the land!
*
These modern day G/Ts are nothing but clever opportunist criminals who have perfectly good homes elsewhere but use our flawed system to suit their own ends.

Our licence fee is already funding "media education programmes" aimed at providing a platform for G/Ts to "get their message across" and I believe the highly controversial Rokker Radio headed by Jake Bowers is still operating and transmitting, blatantly promoting the "culture" and often using racist and inflamatory terms against settled folk. All funded by the TV licence fee yet how many G/Ts are likely to know what a TV licence is?

send them back to ireland! disgusting comment! Suppose your the type that wants to send back asians, scottish, welsh, spanish, polish, all coloured races etc. it's called racism. it's illegal and it's very wrong!
then jon austin is so wonderful. believing all what he writes just to sell his papers. he's got his teeth in this story because it's selling papers. not because he gives a monkies himself. he goes back home at night losing sleep over this you think? fool!
his wordings of the news that he brings to the paper for everyone to read purposely worded to steer peoples thoughts into thinking badly of them and stereotyping.
people are people, regardless of lifestyle and culture.
some people just like to look down their noses at people because it makes their pathetic lives feel far more superior.

These people are not a race, therefore it is not racist. They are a group of people who have developed a life-style that is all. Other groups have done the same such as the Hells Angels which is based on self interest and lack of conformity with the law.

They are white Caucasian. Some silly Government made them a minority.
I would hazard a guess that nobody on here minds who comes to these shores as long as they contribute and uphold our laws.
What we don't want is violent, anti-social ponces, whatever their origins.

quite right. we dont want people that commit crimes, mugging old ladies, burgleries, murderes, pedophiles, domestic violence incidences. armed robbers etc. but, very sadly it is happening all over the world. its not just people coming onto our shores from abroad. the english people are also in prison in our country and in foreign countries for crimes they have committed. i remember years ago. if you were 'coloured' you were stereotyped as a criminal. have we not moved on in times. or is there still people in a time warp.
this country should accomodate for cultures. ie 'gypsy' folk.
an acre and a half of land, or try to house 95 families. 95 houses to be built to accomodate or over crowded bed sitters costing councils fortunes. whilst full waiting lists for properties from councils.
it would be anarchy if every bit of green belt land was flouted, so of course there has to be a stand. but. there are hardly any purpose made approved gypsy sites available for culture to be followed.
When gypsies apply through the proper channels for permission, the odds for approval are so against them. the percentage differences are so obvious big differences.
a lot of the dale farm travellers brought their own plots and did try to get the permission properly and legitimately and were willing to pay council tax!
please dont be too harsh on them all. there are pregnant women, young babies, tots, children. old terminally ill people on that site.
i'd like to see them helped, not condemned and stereo typed. psycho hitler wanted them all in the gas chamber, and the jews. who liked hitler? lets not all try to be little hitlers. have some heart. please!

Aroma,

What irritates me with your comments is you saying we should accomodate different cultures when this is something the UK and a lot of people do already. The problem with the traveller culture is that it deems to flout the law of the land as and when it wants to!

I don't feel sorry for travellers as they flout the law constantly with their horse and trap racing down public roads, and their illegal sofa trading proven to be run from Dale Farm. You act as though they are so hard done by yet all of a sudden can afford over lavish weddings and large plots of land as and when they want to!

Maybe if they contributed to society by paying tax like every other CULTURE in the UK does then maybe I would be more sympathetic.

Of course by your sympathising I assume you condone the violence of the way they solve issues by bare knuckle fighting. I assume you agree paying taxes and contributing to society is not the done thing. I assume you think planning permission is a waste of time. I assume you think its OK to own other property and still break the law by illegally developing on the green belt.

And of course Aroma, being as you understand the traveller culture so well, why is it they want to build these permanent illegal residences when their culture is actually to travel? I would love to hear your logical answer to this!

I respect the attempt by "a Roma" to engage in a discussion on here rather than bleat to the Echo and having comment blocked.
*
I have been labelled as a racist. I am sceptical of the term "racist" which is used so often nowdays that it trivialises the original meaning. I have nothing against the Irish and admire their stand over the behaviour of itinerant groups in their country. I do have issues over the special concessions given to gipsies and travellers in my country. I am suprised that successive governments have not been taken to task on this due to the direct discrimination it creates against every other ethnic group (including our own).
*
I am against multiculturalism because of the divisions and suspicions it creates in our land. We may have many nationalities but should have one unified culture and one law for all.
*
I would like a.Roma to explain to us why a non-travelling traveller should be treated any differently to anyone else?

I've just listened to Gabby Logan's Radio 5 live program from Dale Farm.
*
Try as she could the poor naive presenter who has obviously never had proper "dealings" with their like before struggled to get a straight answer to her quite refreshingly seeking questions.
*
They had an English Gypsy (who purported to hold a Theology degree from Oxford) trying desperately to convince listeners that the texts coming into the program were all from bigoted racists (heard that before?). Just try substituting Jew for Traveller into this text says he: "The Jews (travellers) never pay any tax on their earnings" Well I know they have the best accountants but I'm sure most of the Jews in Britain have recognised addresses and dont do deals involving rolls of cash and no receipt.
*
Len Grindley was the sole "voice of the locals" but unfortunately he did not come across as the most vocally articulate person there and his cause was not helped by being put on the spot in front of a crowd of G/Ts and asked what he didn't like about them. Where were all the neighbours hiding?
*
One good thing worth noting - Basildon leader Ball mentioned that the £18M sum to evict was a "worst case scenario" .....so maybe the actual cost is about £1m then? and the scale of the "guesstimate" is to promote doubt and fear in the electorate.

I would love to know where Jon Austin is getting his information from to write such ridiculous stories, that are full of lies & fabrication. If he had bothered to look into the story behind the injunction,he would have realised that the whole story was fabrication on chelmsford borough councils part. There has never been irish gypsies or any gypsies come to that, that have anything to do with the land in question. The fact that the land was used to dump lorry load after lorry load of rubbish and hardcore on it & was left looking like a tip was something the council decided to turn a blind eye to last year. Now the new owners have straightened it out & flattened the 20ft high mounds of hardcore that had been left & fenced round the exterior of the land making it look thousand times better than what we had to look at last year, the council are getting on there high horse & making irresponsible presumptions, that are quite clearly fabrication. They have not stopped travellers moving on the land, there were never ever any travellers moving on the site,i'm not sure if its Jon Austin or Chelmsford council who are trying to get praise for this wonderful thing they have done. Maybe people should know what really happened when they spent £500k on the site upgrading it ? Well they did put in main drains for the Lane, they forgot to then fence around the site, they forgot to put a seperate road in for the residents of the lane, they forgot to turn a large proportion of the site to green belt field & park area for the children & forgot to upgrade each individual plot for the travellers. What they did do, was make about 15 new plots, that they tried to sell to other travellers to make themselves more money, when this failed they advertised the plots themselves in the IRISH TIMES to encourage Irish travellers to come to Meadow Lane to buy the plots up cheaper! This is not a rumour this is fact. The £500k has not been spent on the site its exactly the same as it always was except, more plots & more travellers including Irish now. Please do not beleive everything you read or hear from Jon Austin, a lot more research needs to be done before he decides to report a story infuture.

I would suggest that if Jon Austin was guilty of writing his articles dealing with the G/T situation based on lies and fabrication he and his newspaper would have been hauled before the courts many many times by the powerful forces available to the G/T community. Instead Jon has been praised and received industry accolades for his investigative journalism skills.
*
As a "Runwell Resident" you may or may not be privy to everything that is dealt with in the planning department but it does look as if you have a fair amount of information about the G/T situation in your part of the world...inside information maybe?
*
It is common practice for G/Ts to buy a parcel of pasture or rough grazing land and deliberately use it as a dumping ground for waste from their illegal business activities. This serves two purposes - it enables them to dispose of waste without cost and it turns the land into undesirable land so that there is less of a case to protect it as green belt when they decide to develop it for "traveller" occupation.
*
Whether they be English Gypsies or Irish Travellers there is no longer any need for these groups to lead a nomadic lifestyle and consequently no need for continuing site provision. Like anyone else they need a place to live and like anyone else they have the choice of buying or letting or submitting themselves for means-tested social housing. I know why they choose to insist on the "culture" being preserved and I am sure you "Runwell Resident" do also.
*
Chelmsford council must have had a valid reason to place the injunction on the land and it remains to be seen whether this tactic will have more effect on curbing the spread of illegal development than lengthy court battles once development has started. I certainly doubt that every Runwell resident is as pro-traveller as you appear to be.

thelonewhinger says...

And just in case anyone else thinks there is still a case to preserve the "culture" .....take a quick read of the article dated today in the Colchester paper.....once again a travelling group occupy illegally and despite police and council officials insisting they are keeping it tidy and even providing free waste bags..what happened? They disappeared overnight leaving filth, waste and destruction in their wake....scum!
