‘Rundown’ Hadleigh Hall handed back to council management

A RUNDOWN community hall is back under the control of Castle Point Council.

Hadleigh Hall, off Rectory Road, has been privately run since 2005 and hired out for music and leisure events. However, groups using the hall said it has fallen into a poor state.

Dave Freeman, who operated the hall under the company name Sovereign Leisure, has handed it back to the council. He said he had been unable to fund refurbishments.

The council says it will carry out improvements and run the hall until another company or group can be found to take it on.

Ward councillor Cliff Brunt said: “The council is now trying to put it back into order.

“I am sure there are people who are interested.”

The toilets and facilities were described as “grubby” and there was no hot water or central heating at the hall during the winter. Users were provided with plug-in heaters instead. A number of groups who used the hall in the past moved out, leaving a fortnightly jazz club as one of the only regular bookings.

Hadleigh Evening Women’s Institute decided to quit the hall last November after more than 30 years there. Founder member Pat Millard said: “In its heyday, it was lovely. We had caretakers there and they used to keep it beautifully. Council chief executive David Marchant said the lease was voluntarily surrendered.

He added: “Officers are checking to ensure the hall is safe for public use before making it available for hirers and are putting the necessary operational arrangements in place.

“We are seeking to minimise disruption to existing hirers and if necessary they will be offered the use of other council-operated halls. Longer term options for the operation of the hall are currently being considered, but in the meantime the facility will be operated in-house by the council.”

Mr Freeman did not rule out offering to run the hall again in future. He said: “The problem was I was only a shareholder, at the end I was given no option.

“It is not what I wanted. I got on really well with my clients.

“What I am hoping for is I am going to get back in the hall and start turning it around and do the sort of work I wanted to do.”

Anyone interested in using the hall can contact Castle Point Council on 01268 882200.

Is the council incapable of running a hall!?

Obviously no private company is going to invest in the facility, and this will happen all over again.

Why must councils constantly dodge their responsibilities?

"Why must councils constantly dodge their responsibilities?"

Since when has it been a councils responsibility to run "Community Halls"?

Really should get away from this "nanny" mindset people have about councils. You want a community hall? you run it. I don't want my council tax going on a white elephant that is used by a minority of the public.

To be honest I walked passed there Saturday and the building looks like a wreck!

Even round the outside the building is surrounded by weeds growing up the side of the building, if you allow a building to look like cr8p people will treat it like cr8p.

The hall is known as the British legion Hall which is supposed to be there to assist former servicemen will if that is the type of backing we give our servicemen it is a sham!!! and Castle Point Council should either do it properly OR distance themselves from the disgrace.

I think you have got the wrong hall. Surely Hadleigh Hall is the one in John Burrows Recreation Ground. British Legion is the one in the Endway Car Park. If the Council had kept this hall in their ownership they would not have needed money (our money) to buy the Fire Station. This would have served the same purpose.

Running this Hall is not a viable business opportunity for a private company. It will never attract enough interest from the local business community. It will have to be subsidised by the Council and ultimately the tax payer. Hadleigh needs a Hall, and if the Council can find a charitable organisation that is willing to run this Hall then it may just work.
I for one would support the Hall and use it more once the facilities are up to scratch and regular maintenance is carried out.

Call me crazy....but didn't David Freeman say that he wants to improve Hadleigh Hall, but had to hand it back because he was only a share holder.

Why is there such politics & bureaucracy on display here. The council should address this viable option & step away from carrying any further costs. Help in getting Hadleigh Hall up-and-running again. I believe that many are hoping for David Freeman's return with the funding and new plans for better services. Life's too short, action please!
