CHIP fans are in for a treat as the team at Southend’s Adventure Island get frying to try and smash the record for the world’s biggest portion of chips.

On Wednesday, the team at the theme park’s Traditional Fish and Chip Shop will attempt to crack the existing Guinness world record of 368.5kg, which was set in Hereford in 2004.

In a four-hour fry-up, the team will peel, chop and cook the gigantic batch of chips in four deep fat fryers, before they are tumbled into a specially-made giant chip box outside the shop for the official weigh in at 3pm.

Adventure Island Chief Executive Philip Miller said: "Having a fish supper on the seafront is part and parcel of a fantastic tradition that we want to celebrate."

The attempt will be raising cash for Southend hospital’s Bosom Pals breast cancer appeal with visitors able to buy a cone of record-breaking chips afterwards for £1, with the leftovers set to become a tasty treat for pigs at Wick’s Manor farm in Maldon.
