ONLOOKERS at Maldon’s Promenade Park saw a daring river rescue and the apprehension of a dangerous criminal.
However, it was all part of the fun of 999 Emergency Services Day, which took place on Sunday.
Hundreds of people attended the event, despite the torrential rain which hit the county during the afternoon.
They had the chance to mingle with ambulance crews, police, firefighters and even soldiers from the Army’s 16 Medical Regiment, recently returned from Afghanistan.
The entertainment also continued throughout the downpour, with the Essex Zumba Babes performing routines.
However, acrobats Team Kinetix were unable to perform as the ground was too slippy, and a planned tug of war also had to be cancelled.
A river rescue reconstruction and a mock arrest scenario also showed the public examples of the serious business of keeping the district safe.
