I have been campaigning for the safety of children using the paddling pools on Concord Beach, Canvey, for some time and welcome the secure future for the old pool provided by Canvey Town Council (Aug 1).

It has been most rewarding to see visitors to the beach having a great time these past few sunny days.

One unintended consequence of the new railings seems to be children using the pool as a safer place to swim when the tide is high.

However, safety is still a concern to me. Had Castle Point leader Pam Challis looked 250 yards to her left in the photograph she would have seen the “new” pool has deteriorated further recently, with part of the wall breaking up, spilling rocks into the slimy pool. The only work which has been done to the pool recently is the erection of further signage telling visitors to take care around the paddling pool!

One of the signs is so low its sharp corners present a danger to children. It is yet another accident waiting to happen.

At a recent council meeting, Pam Challis made an apology about an accident at a council-run swimming pool. It appears to have been a genuine accident involving something of which the council was unaware.

What sort of apology will Pam Challis make to the next victim of the dangers lurking in the new pool of which she is aware?
