A SELF confessed “idiot” took his mum’s car for a spin despite not having a driving licence or being insured.

George Brown, 22, then tried to stop police seizing the car because he said his mum wouldn’t be able to afford to get it back.

Basildon Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday that Brown had never possessed a full UK driving licence, but already had previous convictions for being caught behind the wheel.

The court heard Brown, of Fleetway, Basildon, got behind the wheel of his mum’s Mazda 323 on Monday, August 1.

Prosecutor Philip Pearson said officers spotted the car being driven in London Road, Pitsea, at 5.15pm. They ran a check on the car which showed it belonged to Brown’s mum and was only insured to be driven by her.

The police stopped Brown and challenged him. They told him they would have to seize the car as he was uninsured to drive it.

It was then that a struggle broke out between Brown and police as he tried to prevent them taking his mum’s car.

Mr Pearson told the court: “He was told the vehicle had to be seized and he refused to hand over the keys.

“He said ‘I know how it works and my mum can’t afford to get the vehicle released if you take it’.”

Brown refused to hand over the keys to the officers and “used his strength” to prevent the female officer from taking them.

He also struggled with the officer as she tried to handcuff him.

Brown, who has two previous convictions for resisting arrest, admitted driving other than in accordance with a licence, driving while uninsured and obstructing a constable.

Representing himself, Brown told the court he had been an “idiot” and had given up booze and drugs, joined a gym and got a job.

He said: “I know what I’ve done is stupid, but I’ve been trying to sort myself out.

“I’m going to get a push bike and stop being an idiot.”

Brown, who had previously been banned from driving for not having a licence, was given another six-month driving ban.

He was fined £334 and ordered to pay £85 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.
