SOUTHEND Council will demonstrate its support for the Essex Pride Festival in Chelmsford by sponsoring a stand at the event.

The festival celebrates diversity in Essex and starts at midday on Sunday, September 4, in Central Park and ends at 11pm.

The council’s effort is partly due to a £300 donation from the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Staff Forum.

Southend Council leader, Nigel Holdcroft, said: “We are determined to ensure all members of our diverse community have the opportunity to contribute their talents to the town as well as accessing our services when needed.

“The Council is delighted to support Essex Pride and it sends a clear message that we value the contribution and diversity of all of our residents to create a respectful and vibrant Southend.”

In previous years, Essex Pride has attracted more than 3,000 people from the LGBT community from across the region and this year will include a number of Southend businesses.

The council will also be flying the LGBT Rainbow flag at the Civic Centre from today to Monday, September 5.

Combined with the football match, Southenders v London Titans, staged earlier this year to mark the Kick Homophobia Out of Football campaign, the ceremony will underline the council’s commitment to not tolerate prejudice.

Unison is providing a coach which will leave from Southend Victoria station at midday on Sunday, September 4, and take festival goers to Chelmsford.
