Furniture previously piled around the scaffolding has been moved to the side of the site.

16:45 Several travellers and their supporters have walked out of Dale Farm, ending a two-day stand off against bailiffs and police.

16.23 Protesters have made new plans to leave the site at 16.45. They plan to march en masse along the main road. 15.33 It has emerged the council reached a deal with the travellers to issue the 48-hour notices, required as part of the recent court wranglings, once the travellers have left. The travellers now appear to have reneged on the that agreement and plan to stay until the notices are issued.

Campaigner Candy Sheridan claims the council has not issued the new 48-hour notices which are necessary for the actual removal of the caravans and hardstanding to begin. She says an emergency injunction has been drafted and will be heard in the High Court if bailiffs act prematurely.

12:47: Traveller campaigner Candy Sheridan is visiting Dale Farm and has criticsed protesters for closing the gate on the barricade, in spite of the High Court ruling it should be kept open.

12:24: Two giant diggers are moving towards the scaffolding barricade from the bailiffs' compound. About 10 protesters remain in the watch tower at the top of the scaffolding.

12:22 The clearance has become a police-led, rather than bailif-led, operation, according to Basildon Council's leader. Tony Ball said cops were intended to enter the site after bailiffs as back up - but because violence and disorder had been threatened beforehand, police had to enter first. He said: "It looks like it might have quietened down a bit." He added he still hoped the clearance could be carried out peacefully.

12:10 Police are to hold an enquiry into the use of tasters at Dale Farm earlier this morning. Superintendent Trevor Roe said: "There was an isolated incident when serious violence was offered to a pair of officers and their response was to protect themselves. "They carry personal protective equipment with them, including tasers. "They are not usually required, but this was an isolated incident." Paramedics have treated one casualty suffering from a back injury, four suffering from smoke inhalation and one with chest pains. Four refused to go to hospital when paramedics offered.

11:56 Three arrests have been made and six people injured, police and ambulance workers have confirmed.

He said: “The pre-meditated and organised scenes of violence that we have already seen with protesters throwing rocks and bricks, threatening police with iron bars and setting fire to a caravan are shocking.

“These are utterly disgraceful scenes and demonstrate the fact some so called supporters were always intent on violence.

“Nonetheless we are going to press on with this operation with our partners in a safe, dignified and humane way and will uphold the law.”

Intelligence received indicated protesters had stockpiled various items with the intent of using these against bailiffs and police.
