Firefighters tackle house fire in Westcliff

FIREFIGHTERS tackled a fire at a house this afternoon.

Crews from Southend were called to Station Avenue, Westcliff, at 2.40pm today after a washing machine caught light.

The resident spotted smoke coming from the machine and left the house after shutting the door to the utility room.

When firefighters arrived they found the room full of smoke but as the door had been closed the damage was only in the utility room.

Crews donned breathing apparatus and put the fire out before using a fan to clear the house of smoke.

This is hardly headline news is it? The fire service are the least busy of the emergency services, but are the best at shouting about every little job they do.

this is usually because these items, delivered to us online by newsquest, are a copy and paste of whichever county's fire service twitter feed.

I am always suprised when there is a massive fire somewhere and news says fire crews battled to control it and were hardpushed etc yet often there is one to sit in the cab to work the radio and another to run around with a cam corder , time to moderinise , do they still need to risk theirs and the publics necks driving tons of truck through busy junctions at speed to what is often no more than a bin fire, they should grade the calls , a waste bin is less risk than a chip pan fire etc , still firemen do a good job , driving mini cabs, painting @ decorating , building work etc , suprised they dont fall asleep

So when your house is on fire or you or one of yours is trapped in a burning car after an accident can we assume that you'll be quite content for them to amble along to you at 30mph obeying all traffic light signals etc? Thought not! Fyi - you need someone in charge of comms on the fire-ground so details of the incident can be passed back to the control room where decisions to increase pumps.resources can be made.
