Train attack: Boys hand themselves into police

FIVE boys wanted in connection with an attack, where a mum was punched unconscious on a train, have handed themselves in to police.

They voluntarily attended Pitsea police station after the Echo ran CCTV images of five men officers wanted to speak to following the attack on a c2c train from Fenchurch Street.

It is understood the men have not been formally arrested, but were “helping officers with their inquires”.

A police spokeswoman said: “Thanks to an overwhelming response from the public, a number of names were passed to police.

“Following an appeal in the Echo, five men voluntarily attended Pitsea police station earlier this week to assist police with their inquiries.

“The investigation continues.”

It was reported on Friday a 33-year-old woman from Rayleigh was with her partner, a 41-year-old man from Southend, her 14-year-old daughter and her elderly mum when she was punched.

The woman and her partner had asked a group of rowdy yobs on the train to pipe down.

But the thugs began hurling abuse at the couple.

The yobs got off the train at Pitsea, but one of the gang ran back on and punched the woman in the face, knocking her unconscious and to the ground.

The rest of the gang then got back on the train and set upon the woman’s partner, leaving him with a broken finger and cuts to his ear.

After the Echo ran CCTV stills of the gang on Friday, several readers phoned police to pass their names to officers.

One boy, a 16-year-old, arrested near the scene of the incident, remains on bail.

Witnesses to the incident, which happened at 3am on New Year’s Day, can contact transport police on 0800 405040 quoting reference B7/LNA of 04/12/2012.

"Following an appeal in the Echo, five men voluntarily attended Pitsea police station earlier this week to assist police with their inquiries."

Five MEN. The one who threw the punch was only 16 years old and was arrested 'near the scene of the accident'.

So, the headline of "Boys hand themselves into police" is totally misleading.

If they handed themselves in, then imho they SHOULD still be arrested. I was once arrested for simply stopping another motorist from tailgating me at speed, by stopping on a main road and stoppinging her from passing, before shouting from WITHIN my car to back off. She told the police I had in fact THREATENED her, so they arrested me.

Thats what you get for not keeping your mouth shut. I know you should be able to tell people to quiet down, but the lads were obviously drunk.

Boyracer - are you for real? Its idiots around your age that have no manners, no morals and dont know what being a decent human being is all about. When you have your own kids and you're in public surrounded by idiots swearing you have to make a stand. I dare say these lads were dragged up by scummy parents. Punching a woman is beyond any kind of reasoning and God help the scumbag if I'd have been on the train. He should be birched and then given a few punches to see what it feels like. Let's hope they name and shame him so his family can be really proud and be seen for what they have brought up. I'd die of shame if my kids did that to a woman.

Seasider the only sensible thing you said there was, lets hope they name and shame.Thank god you did bring your kids up well, a lot don't !!Its not clever or big "God help the scumbag if you'd been on the train". Yes lots of us feel like that, but do we want to be stabbed, shot knocked out, No I dont think so. It sounds like my old mum used to say "you and who's army" ?

Well the most sensible for the family to do is move to a different carriage if they didnt want their kids to hear the swearing. I know it was wrong hitting her, but are they really causing any harm by swearing? They caused more harm when she opened her mouth.

why shoud they have to move carriages, they may have had a lot of baggage to move, may have missed the train by getting out!! Are they causing harm by swearing ? most certainly, its causing a breach of the peace , yes? Someone said they were drunk, should not be drunk in a public place. if they cannot sensibly deal with drink, dont partake!

Well lucky it was only a punch. Could of been a knife. Im considering arming as a youth growing up. No intent to use it, but a flash of the knife to someone that is starting to get lairy to you could be enough to make them think twice! Thats what its like in this day and age. I know someone that goes around with a BB gun of a night time to threaten people with it if they start on him.

Please don't arm yourself mate.

You are only one step away from using it, and there is always the possibility that it could be used against you.

Why should the family have to be the ones to move when they are behaving (presumably) in a civilised fashion, having their peace and space vilely brutalised by this drunken scum? You might say the hooting, drunken scum have the right to behave like neanderthals, but anyone around them also has the right to ask them to tone their behaviour down a bit without running the risk of any kind of retaliation, be it verbal or physical.

I notice further down you are contemplating arming yourself with a knife 'for show' - by doing that you are merely adding to and perpetuating what is an already out of control problem.

And if they're allowed to get away with that sort of behaviour, because people stand aside and 'keep their mouth shut', what sort of message does that send out?

"Evil will only win if good people stand by and do nothing"

If more people in this day and age showed a bit of backbone and stood up for what they believe in instead of turning the other cheek or being too frightened to do anything then chav scum like this wouldn't behave this way because they'd know the consequences

A rather cleverly convincing one at times but a troll nevertheless. Sorry to have spoiled your fun boyracer but it had to be said. We don't want to give any idiots out there the notion that it's acceptable to carry any kind of weapon whether it's intended for use or not. Believe it or not, there are young people around who are impressionable enough to take you for real !

I am shocked by this report particularly as

not all the facts have been reported, the lads were completely out of order and obviously hitting anyone is wrong and they should be made to pay for their actions , but has anyone asked what made the boys get back on the train ????

You are right. He is a Troll, and as such will eventually fall foul of the law. He's sign on is " Boy racer" but he describes himself in his letter as a " Youth, growing up". Well sunshine, you can't be both. If you are twenty years old, you are technically a man. Unfortunately that title can also be used for Numpty's, as well as real men, who would not make innane comments like yours about carrying knives and guns. Grow up " Boy Racer".

I think it's more to do with the person using a thread pretending to be someone they are not. This is usually for their own entertainment and/or to see and muse at the response they provoke.

Well why do you type into the echo website, I never do!? Why don’t you type it into word then copy and paste?
Anyway is this woman insane, why in the hell would she possibly do this and not expect anything to happen! A large group of rowdy youths who were probably drinking – Does she think this is 1940?

Silly word really, I am sure absolutely no thought went into it !! But I do agree with you, not in a million years would I have said anything to them !! Boyracer, your kind of attitude gives us younger members of this area a bad reputation, and why so many people feel intimidated on public transport or out in the street. I suggest you open your eyes, and look at the bigger picture. People need to learn the meaning of respect.
