FIVE boys wanted in connection with an attack, where a mum was punched unconscious on a train, have handed themselves in to police.
They voluntarily attended Pitsea police station after the Echo ran CCTV images of five men officers wanted to speak to following the attack on a c2c train from Fenchurch Street.
It is understood the men have not been formally arrested, but were “helping officers with their inquires”.
A police spokeswoman said: “Thanks to an overwhelming response from the public, a number of names were passed to police.
“Following an appeal in the Echo, five men voluntarily attended Pitsea police station earlier this week to assist police with their inquiries.
“The investigation continues.”
It was reported on Friday a 33-year-old woman from Rayleigh was with her partner, a 41-year-old man from Southend, her 14-year-old daughter and her elderly mum when she was punched.
The woman and her partner had asked a group of rowdy yobs on the train to pipe down.
But the thugs began hurling abuse at the couple.
The yobs got off the train at Pitsea, but one of the gang ran back on and punched the woman in the face, knocking her unconscious and to the ground.
The rest of the gang then got back on the train and set upon the woman’s partner, leaving him with a broken finger and cuts to his ear.
After the Echo ran CCTV stills of the gang on Friday, several readers phoned police to pass their names to officers.
One boy, a 16-year-old, arrested near the scene of the incident, remains on bail.
Witnesses to the incident, which happened at 3am on New Year’s Day, can contact transport police on 0800 405040 quoting reference B7/LNA of 04/12/2012.

Thats what you get for not keeping your mouth shut. I know you should be able to tell people to quiet down, but the lads were obviously drunk.

naughtyladyofshadylaWell lucky it was only a punch. Could of been a knife. Im considering arming as a youth growing up. No intent to use it, but a flash of the knife to someone that is starting to get lairy to you could be enough to make them think twice! Thats what its like in this day and age. I know someone that goes around with a BB gun of a night time to threaten people with it if they start on him.

why shoud they have to move carriages, they may have had a lot of baggage to move, may have missed the train by getting out!! Are they causing harm by swearing ? most certainly, its causing a breach of the peace , yes? Someone said they were drunk, should not be drunk in a public place. if they cannot sensibly deal with drink, dont partake!

You might say the hooting, drunken scum have the right to behave like neanderthals, but anyone around them also has the right to ask them to tone their behaviour down a bit without running the risk of any kind of retaliation, be it verbal or physical.

I am shocked by this report particularly as
not all the facts have been reported, the lads were completely out of order and obviously hitting anyone is wrong and they should be made to pay for their actions , but has anyone asked what made the boys get back on the train ????

Well sunshine, you can't be both. If you are twenty years old, you are technically a man. Unfortunately that title can also be used for Numpty's, as well as real men, who would not make innane comments like yours about carrying knives and guns. Grow up " Boy Racer".

naughtyladyofshadylaI think it's more to do with the person using a thread pretending to be someone they are not. This is usually for their own entertainment and/or to see and muse at the response they provoke.

Five MEN. The one who threw the punch was only 16 years old and was arrested 'near the scene of the accident'.
So, the headline of "Boys hand themselves into police" is totally misleading.
