Burglary may force charity shop to close

BURGLARS have raided three charity shops in the same street- and may force one of them to close.

They smashed the rear doors of the Mind Shop and British Heart Foundation shop, in Hamlet Court Road.

This happened less than a week after the nearby Sue Ryder charity shop was burgled.

Police are connecting the raids and appealing for any information.

The latest attacks happened between 5pm on Wednesday, February 1, and 7.20am on Thursday, February 2.

At Mind, the safe was stolen which contained a three figure sum of cash and around £100 worth of damage was caused. At the British Heart Foundation, the burglars didn’t manage to steal anything but they did attempt to remove the safe and damaged it in the process. The total value of the damage there is estimated at around £1250, and the shop may now be forced to close.

The burglary at the Sue Ryder shop happened between January 28 and 30. About £200 of damage was caused and a three figure sum of cash was removed from the safe.

Anyone with information should call DC David Thompson can be contacted at Southend police station on 101.

What kind of merchant banker would do such a thing? Catch them & make them walk down the high street with a sign to say what they done. No police protection & no one can be charged for what they do to these scum.

With what the British Heart Foundation charge i'm sure £1250 won't be a problem, that's about the price of a pair of socks in there!

Why is such a large amount of money kept on the premises at night. It should be banked daily with only enough for till floats left in the safe.

£1250 was the cost of damage & not what was taken.

I'm sure the insurance will pay for damages. Is it true that Charity shops only have to donate 1% of annual takings to the cause ? not a bad game to get into eh ? free stock, tax cuts etc.

That is scandalous if it's true. While people are quite happy to be relieved of any unwanted items, customers expect the money they spend at Charity shops to actually GO TO the charity.
It's sad that Hamlet Court is being targeted in this way. The Police should patrol that street every night - all night - all year - but that sadly doesn't happen and all businesses are left there to dread what will happen to them next.

Read again. The article states "a three figure sum" was in the safes from which money was stolen.

The law should be changed in order that premises are permitted to connect the mains to the safe when they close for the night.

That may sound extreme, particularly as there will be no cutbacks to front line services!!!!!
