Smugglers jailed for £50million a year tax fraud

A GANG has been jailed for one of the biggest alcohol smuggling frauds ever in the UK.

Ringleader Kevin Burrage, 49, of Ravendale Way, Shoebury, was part of an operation which made £50 million a year in unpaid duty and VAT.

He has been jailed for ten years for his part in the enterprise, which allowed him to spend out on high performance cars and luxury properties.

He is also banned from being a company director for 12 years.

His brother-in-law, Gary Clark, 55, of Maplin Way North, Thorpe Bay, was jailed for six years nine months.

It comes after they were both found guilty of conspiracy to cheat the Public Revenue and sentenced at Canterbury Crown Court.

Let's hope the likes of Burrage, Cooke and their associates become very lonely old men while serving their prison sentences and they reflect on their crimes.

Crooks like this have no place in modern society, justice has been served.

Whilst I don't condone what these men did, I can't help wondering if they would have received shorter sentences if they had been smuggling drugs.

Shame you can't count as it was 4 cars, n ow 3 and not all high performance cars. Over exaggeration same as the head line 50 million a year, which in fact, over 22 months was 7.49 million

We all know the house. There is always a selection of black cars from manufacturers such as AMG, Bently and Range Rover on the drive.

Was this the guy who had something like £200 confiscated recently after it was found stuffed in a cupboard at his business premises?

I mean £200k, not £200....

These men nicked a few quid off the tax man - big deal! Perhaps if they'd also had some inappropriate images of children on their PC's they would have got less.

But isn't it a big deal when it is at that level? How often do people moan about cuts to services that really affect real people?

Compared to the amount of money the government make from the tax on booze (whilst simultaneously spouting how bad it is for us!) this is indeed a drop in the ocean.

That's not to say that I actually believe the figures quoted are anywhere near factual.

THESE PEOPLE HAVE BEEN MADE AN EXAMPLE OF, THEY ARE NOT DEALERS, NONCES OR MURDERERS, 10 YEARS IS CRAZY..........YES THEY HAVE COMMITED A CRIME AND SHOULD BE PUNISHED BUT THE LEVEL OF SENTENCING NEEDS TO BE REVIEWED COMPARED WITH SAY AN EASTERN EUROPEAN MAN WHO KILLS A YOUNG BOY ALONG A BUSY ROAD WITH NO INSURANCE ETC THEN RIDES AWAY......THEN GETS JUST OVER HALF OF THIS MANS SENTENCE.........JUS
TICE???????? GOOD LUCK TO THE MAN....DO YOUR TIME THEN COME BACK OUT AND ENJOY WHATS LEFT !!!!!!!

Well this story is in fact old- the sentencing was only last week- found guilty about a month ago- and the fact there was six cars then and now 4 is besides the point!!- i didnt say when there was 6!!- still i guess in someone elses name- and there turnover in 2006 was over £50millon- dropped of since- so it stacks up!
