Updated: Firefighters tackle huge blaze in Tilbury

FAMILIES returned to their homes this morning after a huge blaze in a scrapyard spread to a warehouse and several cars.

Firefighters were called to the scrapyard in Hume Avenue, Tilbury, shortly after 7pm last night (Monday).

A 200 metre exclusion zone was set up around the large warehouse, outbuildings and workshops and ten cars after potential explosive cylinders were identified as being involved.

Around 60 people were evacuated and spent the night in a rest centre staffed by Thurrock Council's emergency planning team

After spending several hours dousing the flames, firefighters put out the fire at 2.13am and vented and cooled off the acetylene cylinders.

People were allowed to return to their homes after crews left the site just after 5.30am this morning.

Trains were temporarily suspended between Pitsea and Grays because the train track runs just 50m away from the fire. Services along this route have now been reinstated.

A total of 16 fire crews from across south Essex rushed to the scene to tackle the blaze, using ladders hoses and foam.

Incident Commander-Divisional Officer Gary Jeffery said: "Firefighters have done an excellent job in preventing the fire from spreading to surrounding commercial and residential properties."

A joint investigation by police and the fire service will be carried out to establish the cause of the blaze.

I find people that sl*g other towns off so pathetic. When there are stories about other towns i dont make nasty comments about those places. Every town has good and bad places. I have lived in Tilbury 30 years and i like living there. I have a good job that pays very well and i have a nice house, just because i live there doesn’t make me any less of a person than someone who lives in a more well off area. People are moving into Tilbury so that their children can attend the Gateway Academy, my town is a nice place to live. Grow up and Keep your nasty comments to yourself!

If you have a good job that pays well has nothing to do with it.
Tilbury has always been a docking town always willbe.
As for good places and bad tilbury is a slum from start to finsh.
Tilbury hasn't go one descent estate on it they are all outdated houses.
As for the up keep of the properties when you drive past, well thats the best thing to do keep driving.

Haven't none of you heard of garden centres ? it's amazing what you can do
to the front of your property nowdays with a dayout at a garden centre.
some nice hanging baskets, or potting plants does wonders.

but clear the crap off the grass and give it a good cut early spring works wonders.

Your not pikeys so don't live like one.

see what i mean says...
