MORE than 200 picturesque Victorian-style homes are destined for Basildon after plans for the £250million regeneration of the Cray-lands Estate were approved.
The approval by councillors means the developer, Swan Housing, can create the new homes, shops, a community hall and village green.
The latest proposals are for 206 homes to be built within the central core of the estate, between Craylands and Lincoln Road.
The developer said the properties would benefit from “art and craft” and “Victorian’” influences, with design features including stone door surrounds, projecting window sills, bow windows and bonnet dormers.
The flats, houses and maisonettes, were due to have a plainer look, but Swan Housing changed the plans to give the estate a more traditional feel.
The ten-year scheme to totally revamp Craylands was first agreed in outline form in 2006.
Once completed, it will see 1,310 homes built on the estate and the nearby Fryerns School site. The area has been renamed Beechwood Village.
These latest plans, a mixture of social and private housing, were welcomed by members of Basildon Council’s development control committee.
Frank Tomlin, councillor responsible for housing, said: “This phase of the regeneration will deliver much better quality housing to central Basildon and improve the landscape of the area dramatically.
“The design of the new homes is more traditional and will be pleasing in appearance, adding character and creating a development with its own sense of identity.”
In addition to the homes, a stretch of land to the west of Craylands and Peterborough Way will be used as a village green to be enjoyed by residents for leisure and social activities.
Three new shop outlets and a community hall will also be built as part of the new phase of plans.
Mark Thompson, Swan Housing Association’s deputy chief executive, added: It’s very good news the plans have been accepted by the council.
“It affects how the newly-regenerated estate will look and feel for residents.
“The Craylands regeneration is a long-term project.
“It is really important the plans we have in place remain relevant and adaptable, in order to deliver the sustainable regeneration of the area.”

Looks nice !!!! Are the same old crap people going to be moved back in ? Love Nebs comment !!!!!!!!!!!

Obviously earmarked for the workers from the nearby incinerator plant, or perhaps additional 2nd or maybe 3rd houses for our much revered Tory council Cabinet. Although I have to add, we had a council cabinet in my mum's council house kitchen when I was a lad, that was rotten too, so nothing changes does it?

Between Craylands and Lincoln Road isn't just the central core, its the complete estate.

A village green. That's handy. More space for future housebuilding.

This could then, be described as 'the central core' by them, I guess.

They now live on benefit, as do pensioners whose bosses robbed them of their pensions, the men whose wives run of and leave then with the children to support etc. etc.
Will someone please tell me WHY is it the less you do for this country the more money you get thrown at you.

Why not adjust your comment to attack the ones who can't be bothered to work rather than the plethora that have no choice!
