RUBBISH thrown out by Southend Hospital is now turned into energy and nothing is buried in landfill sites.
Cory Environmental recycles the hospital’s rubbish and has built a plant which burns what the hospital chucks out and cannot be recycled any other way.
Fires fuelled by rubbish from the hospital and many other sources in Southend creates steam to generate electricity which is sold to the national grid.
Daniel Dallas, the hospital’s environment waste manager said: “We are looking to move towards a more sustainable way of disposal for the future and Cory provides an environmentally friendly process which avoids using landfill sites.”
The biggest saving for the hospital is the 100 per cent cut in landfill tax and it also receives carbon credits.
Nigel O’Dell, Cory’s local contract manager added: “We are delighted to be helping Southend Hospital and other organisations in the area to see their waste as a resource to generate electricity and to save money in the process.”
