THE future of the district’s only hockey club has been secured following a u-turn by the council over its pitch.

Maldon District Council has agreed to pay out £150,000 to refurbish the synthetic surface facility in Park Drive, Maldon, having initially decided to close it last June.

The decision means Maldon and Little Baddow Hockey Club, which runs teams for men and women and has a junior section for children as young as six, will be able to return to the pitch next season, having played in exile in South Woodham Ferrers since September.

The item was originally meant to be heard in private by the council’s finance committee last Tuesday, but it was moved to a public session, enabling several young players and parents to attend the meeting.

The club, which will contribute £35,000 to the project, will also receive £5,400 from the council each year for the next decade as a grant.
