Southend Council wins council of the year at Local Government Chronicle awards

SOUTHEND Council was tonight named Council of the Year 2012 at the Local Government Chronicle Awards.

The achievement made it third time lucky for the council, which was shortlisted for the same award last year and narrowly missed out on being named Most Improved Council of the Year in 2010.

The award was presented to Chief Executive Rob Tinlin and Council Leader Nigel Holdcroft at a special awards ceremony held at the Grosvenor House in London's Park Lane.

Congrats to the council. i know that the usual haters - katch22 etc will be on here to slag Southend Council off but it is good that the hard work the council officers and civil servants do is recognised. It should be noted however that despite this award there should be no room for complacency and the standard has been set for them to reach every year!

Council of the Year?

If SBC are CotY then heaven only knows what the rest are like.

Still, good to know that while our elderly residents wonder where they are going to find the money for the increase in the cost of their Meals on Wheels for the coming year the great?, and the good?, are able to enjoy being wined and dined at the Grosvenor House while slapping each others backs celebrating what a great job they've done.

Just remember, we're all in this together; yeah, right! We might be in it but some obviously aren't quite.

what are the criteria for such obscure awards.

the rest of the councils nominated must have had there towns riddled with fire and pox to lose against SBC..

i cant say i have ever heard of the LGC!! what on earth are they claim to chronicle? I bet its decline and public dissatisfaction.

the next award given to SBC Tories will be the golden boot, that is of course if they are not again blessed with low turnout at the polls and general apathy from the many disenfranchised..

Use your new found influence to get the borough designated as an Enterprise Zone due to the massive unemployment, and you might be able to speed up the industrial investment around the airport.

This story is something the left wing 'I hate anything SBC does and I have always voted Labour and hate Anna Waite club' have waited for a chance to spout off!!

And here is another chance from me, The Sea Front looks better, the junctions at Priory Park,Progress Road and Victoria Circus are running better, and the Airport despite all The Socialist Die hards having to admit they were wrong is going great guns and finally despite the orchestrated and nasty campaign against Anna Waite she is still active and adding very truthful comments about the low life scroungers that contibute very little to the town.

What a good day for SBC and a bad day for the SWP.

While Rochford Airport is becoming a major player in the area, there is more to Southend than that. There are residents primarily, a Pier that needs attention, and many issues that need addressing. How on Earth did SBC get this award? What a load of tosh!

Rochford airport? Are you being pedantic over the borough boundary, or is there a second airport in the area that the rest of us have missed?
Really surprised that the usual bile that is spouted out everytime SBC is mentioned hasn't started. Interested to read about the allegations that the award is due to bribery, corruption & the "unnecessary" renovation work on the Civic Centre, which is what is usually said.
Like others I have never heard of the Local Government Chronicle, but I do not work within government, whether national or local, so wouldn't be aware of all the specialist periodicals.
Here's an idea, why don't we all take a minute to think what it is that the judges saw to award this prize, congratulate our council officers on their efforts, & decide what we can all do to help improve what we feel is wrong. I am led to believe there are some elections in May, so why not just use your vote in a way that will, hopefully, benefit the borough.
Enterprise Zone sounds a good idea ro me, how do we encourage SBC to make the application?

From the LGC Shortlist.

SOUTHEND-ON-SEA BC
Despite financial constraints and adapting to a new government agenda, Southend-on-Sea continues to
serve its communities well, providing high-quality services that meet their changing needs. The council
has made every effort to streamline back-office functions and drive efficiencies. This means that it has
avoided stopping or closing any services this year.
Southend’s achievements have not gone unnoticed - several of its services and projects have garnered
national recognition or been highlighted for best practice. Its huge ambitions for the town – to be
recognised as the cultural capital of the East of England; to promote a thriving sustainable economy;
and to have first-class services and flourishing, active communities - have not wavered in the face of
challenges. Rather, the council has delivered a programme of capital investment projects that will make
a real difference to its residents and businesses for years to come.

New Library being built as we speak, fantastic new building planned for the seafront. Victoria gateway works ok but a bit too much paving for my taste. Please do something decent with the pier!

on an analytical note.

i can think of several things the council have failed on.

. city of culture bid
. city status bid
. regional casino bid
. demolition of York road market
. unusable cafe in warrior square
. unusable cafe at the base of pier hill
. debt to the approximate tune of 200 million
. loss of walk in face to face support at the civic centre
. astronomical parking charges
. poor transport infrastructure and high congestion despite massive central government grants
. declining high street and non airport related private investment
. borough wide dissatisfaction at council services
. high crime rates
. poor academic results and secondary schools frequently in ofsted special measures
. a closed cabinet Toryocracy
. high council consultant costs and few open public consultations that are published in full upon completion to the public
. selective and bias building consent for large scale projects

this is just the short list.

the award was given by an organisation that councils join and it is out of all it members who wins,

"Conservative group

The Conservative Party is the largest party in local government, and is also the largest party in the Local Government Association (LGA) with over 9,000 councillors and control of more than 200 councils. The LGA Conservative Group exists to support Conservative councillors involved with the LGA by offering advice, research and policy support.
"
this come from the LGA web site . If you care to look around there are very few if any independant bodies that award councils, so organisations like the "planning officers association" and LGA are set up to basicly award themselves its all good PR at face value but thats all. I would feel very stupid congratulating anybody that wins an award, awarded by an organisation that they are the majority in,

The minority always shout the loudest. Congratulations SBC. Repeatedly residents have voted at the polls for the conservatives to run this wonderful town. Labour supporters would have to travel a long way to live in a left wing council area. London I assume. So off you go dont send a postcard I work in London and its a **** hole.

Sadly the like of Jayman and all the other knockers will moan even if ther Council spent £100billion on the pier, gave everyone 100years off Council Tax, paid for everyones Gas, Water & Leccy, paid for every Southender to have two holidays anywhere in the world and then gave them £100million spending money each!

FACT

people forget it was labour that bust the UK with their spend spend spend policy without making sure that country could afford to pay its bills, now they have lost power they can see that it was they that caused the major issue that has resulted in the cuts we see now.

I await jaymans typical reply....

Off to the pub now farewell drink to a work mate, day off on Friday to recover!

Congratulations from me too. Well done SBC, who from my perspective have done a great job running the town, shame that we didn't make the City status though.

I would never consider myself a Conservative voter by any means but say what you will, the Tories have done a great job for Southend and even I couldn't but help vote for them in the local elections.

To all those who think the Council is just a bunch of overpaid layabouts, sorry, don't just count all the things that they failed to achieve but rather concentrate on what they did for the town.

I have had various dealings with the Council over the years and always, without a single exception, found them helpful, willing to find a solution and considerate.

Of course I don't agree with every single descission they make but that's what's commonly referred to as democracy.

There is just one single issue that I still have with SBC, their inability to deal with all the rubbish that people are happily throwing in the streets. Now that's an issue that needs dealing with. After all, this is our hometown and not some landfill site.

Once again, congratulations to the town as a whole and SBC in particular. Well done.

Once in a while I think it would be nice for posters to stick to the subject at hand, rather then constantly hijacking the threads.

This is not about who's to blame for the banking/fiscal crisis, this is about SBC winning an award.

i fear you have got your katch22's mixed up, one k22 (imposter) would probably do that, the other genuine k22 wouldn't bother! He is more at odds with Basildon council than SE.

Love it.
Especially the way the councillors refuse to accept the state of the roads. The underhanded way they removed the protesters at priory park after they'd gone back on their word over the trees or even, get this, the way they ran York Rd market down to replace it with a car park which, incidently was 'fee free' for a few months as they hadn't gone for 'Change of use' under the Town and Country Planning Order 1987 and yet somehow were quite willing to take payment.
Yes, well done Southend!
Im not a hater, im not 'liker' either for better want of words, but the Council DID nominate itself. And refitting the Civic Center with new kitchens, dish washers (every floor) while employing a special needs person to save on the minimum wage, well..what do people expect the reaction to be?
