SOUTHEND United chairman Ron Martin is hoping play-off fever grips south Essex ahead of tomorrow’s second leg with Crewe Alexandra.

The Blues trail the Railwaymen by a single goal in their bid to land a place in the showpiece League Two play-off final at Wembley Stadium.

And Martin believes a vocal backing from the Roots Hall crowd could make all the difference in separating the two sides.

“It is important that the town gets behind the team on Wednesday night in what should be another exciting atmosphere under the floodlights of Roots Hall,” said Martin.

“We have a brilliant fan base with many hundreds of supporters travelling long distances, as was the case at Gresty Road on Saturday.

“The club has had a good season but with the extra support on Wednesday we can make it into a great season.”

“Disappointingly, the team did not perform to their normal standard on Saturday.

“These players are very talented, with a great team spirit, and I know they will be wanting to make amends come Wednesday night.

“With a full stadium we can create a cracking atmosphere to help the players and provide that extra impetus, and a strong crowd could just provide the competitive edge over Crewe.

“In my view the winner of Wednesday’s encounter will be hot favourites to also succeed at Wembley.”

Tickets are selling fast and supporters are urged to buy their tickets in advance of Wednesday night.

Fans can call the Blues ticket office on 08444 77 00 77 or visit Roots Hall in person to purchase their tickets.
