Southend Airshow this weekend
7:50am Saturday 26th May 2012 in News
IT’S one of the most eagerly awited events in the town’s calendar and next weekend will see Southend Airshow fly into town.
Featuring a spotter’s dream of plane action, as well as plenty on the ground for those who just enjoy the buzzing atmosphere and excitement of the popular weekend, it’s set to be another top year.
Although the show is missing regulars – the popular Red Arrows – there’s plenty to more than make up for it.
Held for the first time in association with easyJet, the airshow weekend will feature demonstrations from the daring Breitling Wingwalkers, the headline Typhoon and the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight.
Saturday 3pm-6pm and Sunday 2.30pm-5.30pm
Typhoon
Battle of Britain Memorial Flight
Hawk (solo)
Tucano
Tutor
King Air
P51 Mustang
Breitling Wingwalkers
The Blades
Spitfire
SBach 300
The Trig Aerobatic Team
SWIP Team
Harvard Pair
Jet Provost
The participation of aircraft is subject to serviceability, weather and operational commitments and displays can be cancelled or delayed under the event organisers’ discretion.
On the ground, as well as visits from the Royal Air Force, Army and Navy, there are new additions for 2012, including a Spitfire and RAF at War display in the Flight Zone, as well as a whole host of fantastic military vehicles, including tanks in the Land Zone for you to have your photo taken with.
There are plenty other new additions for the weekend, with the zones extended to include City Beach and the High Street.
There will be lots of involvement with local groups and community organisations as well as businesses who are getting involved with the action.
There’s a host of activities for kids, including the usual flight simulators, giant inflatables and bungee trampolines, and new attractions which include bumper boats and mini tanks.
If you’re hungry, you can tuck into the range of international food on offer, with caterers selling Indian, Chinese, Greek, Italian, Mexican and more. If you like a laugh, you can try your hand at V Ball – loosely based on beach volleyball – which will be taking place on City Beach, while on the Saturday you can help local charity Havens as it attempts to break a world record for the most people simultaneously performing the Superman dance at 1pm in the main arena.
There’ll be plenty of other charities too, both local and national, from Help for Heroes to the National Trust, who’ll be showcasing their work on stalls.
With so much going on, it can be easy to miss stuff, so we’ve pulled out some of the highlights for you so you don’t miss anything.

Good weather or not, I really cannot get excited about a few flying lawnmowers and a kite. As for the rubbish on the ground, I cannot get excited about double glazing stands and overpriced hot dogs.
Let's face it, the airshow is a really lacklustre event these days and the organisers have no sense of adventure anymore. What is the difference in the flying programme this year over last year, over the year before or the year before that. I'll tell you... nothing at all. Even the saving grace, the Red Arrows, only seem to fly every other year. If the weather is nice I would rather be in my garden watching the butterflies.

This load of cr*p is advertised in the flying program - basically you can see a Tornado and some wing walkers! Time to pull the plug methinks!

Following the event, the mess left behind is absolutely revolting. As this is an event that is supposed to be show-casing our town, some visitors must be left wondering if they have walked into an open cess-pit. I don't go and I live locally - I certainly wouldn't travel to it!

There are also many other privately or company owned passenger, utility or specialised aircraft that, with a bit of effort, the organisers could get hold of. So, therefore, I do blame the organisers for not putting enough time or effort into it. If it comes down to money then I am afraid, if a decent airshow cannot be afforded one year then don't have the airshow at all that year. Put the money that would have been spent towards a better airshow the following year. A half decent airshow every 2 years (or 4 like the Olympics) would be better than having a very medeocre airshow every year.
You can't blame the organisers for the lack of "exciting" displays that we have seen here in the past. Southend was always on the same weekend as the "Mildenhall Air Fete" which attracted military aircraft from around the world, several of these would also display at Southend while they were over here. Unfortunately with Midenhall now unlikely to ever take place again and the RAF having too few aircraft for current operational requirements, I am afraid this is the best we are likely to get.

Seaside airshows have their limitations. Most of us would prefer the fast and noisy jets, but there just aren't that many about now.
Just because something is quieter and slower, doesn't mean it isn't good.
Go to RIAT for the day and it'll cost you £39 each
Waddington £52 for family ticket.
Duxford £25 each

Personally I quite enjoy the stunt planes. I do like the jets as well but as they are fast jets they make a couple of quick passes and they are gone. At least with the stunt planes they hang around for a bit. What I think would make them better is if they could have something like the Red Bull stunt plane races you sometimes see on TV.

I doubt they will complain too much about the airshow content but will just be pleased with what they see. Only locals winge !!!

liseinga wrote:I like air shows but the Southend one is becoming a shadow of its former self. I can remember when there were the red arrows and the Italian version on in the same day. What have we got now?IMO, a poor selection of aircraft with the most boring staying on the sea-front the longest. The few times I have been to the show in the past few years I have been disappointed with the with the lack of a continuous display. I could tolerate the lack of “spectacular” aircraft if I there was something different 5 minutes later rather than half an hour later.
It's funny to read the comments of those who do not like the air show. Because they do not enjoy it, it should be cancelled, and to hell with the thousands who do enjoy it. How selfish can you be?
Now that the roads into Southend have been designated a rolling road block I wonder how long it took some of the visitors to arrive? Having spent hours in the jam to Saddlers Farm or an equal amount of time in the jam on the 127 with people avoiding Saddlers Farm I wonder what kind of impression Southend is going to leave on the visitors this year? And if they will return again to spend more money?

Another weekend with extra racket from the airport, not a nice place to live anymore!
All that air pollution, the traffic on the roads, the unending noise in the skies and all the drunks in the evening ... no wonder we decided to move far far away!
The show is boring, same stunts, even the same commetary and another night fro A&E to dread what comes through their doors!
.... and the call that 'living'!
maybe you'd like to refrain from commenting on issues which no longer effect you, and concentrate on your new surroundings

A great day out - great show, great weather, great photo opportunities. I don't understand what all the gripes are about. A big thank you to the organisers...

And of course a big 'crowd pleaser' is always the annual appearance of the benefits display team.
A gaggle of 3 tattoo emblazened single mums and their double buggies. How the crowd gasp in awe as they negotiate busy roads - without the use of pedestrian crossings - whilst letting rip with a string of expletives, texting and swigging cheap cider all at the same time...!
Surely a perfect display of multi-tasking, split second timing and team work at it's best.
Now that's the sort of display Southend is really well known for and proud of: always a class act and one that's very hard to beat...
Once again, many thanks to the Chav's for providing the modern Darwin theorists with clear evidence that we are all very much indeed descended from Apes.
Okay, Maybe some more than others?
