Flags flying for Olympics in Castle Point

Flags flying for Olympics in Castle Point Flags flying for Olympics in Castle Point

CASTLE Point is flying the flag in support of this summer’s Olympic Games.

The borough council has been working with Essex County Council and will be placing flags around the area.

There are currently flags on Ferry Road, by Benfleet train station and it is rumoured there will also be flags in Hadleigh town centre, and on Canvey Way.

Canvey councillor Ray Howard said: “I think it looks very pleasant. I have seen ties on the lampposts along Canvey Way, so I presume more will be going up here.

“As we near the Olympics, we want to make our borough look appealing to visitors and I must commend anyone involved in organising the event as they are doing quite a job.”

Alf Partridge, a councillor in St Mary’s ward, Benfleet, said: “I think it is excellent. They will really brighten up the station area and the people of Castle Point will really appreciate them too.”

Wow, I wonder what the cost was for that old crap ? and who got the contract to make em ? and where is Rebecca ? "The voice of castle point" LMAO, what an asset to the borough she is turning out to be, still she did try helping the nation by proposing the "stop the changing of the clock" debacle.

If they do put up flags at Sadlers Farm before the Olympics, as you are suggesting, they will be the only thing to do with Sadlers Farm that has been ahead of schedule with the whole project.

Brnning999 you are correct in the fact that the roads are pot hole ridden and in poor condition generally but you are wrong that it is Castle Point Councils fault, I have been told that it is the responsibility of Essex County Council to maintain the footpaths and roads of the County.
There is a webpage easily found just search for pot hole reporting essex and a map will appear for any one to plot the location of a pot hole or road defect, report your duck ponds on Church Road and get others to do the same, then maybe things will get fixed.

There is blame and it should be pointed at the right people.

There is obviously a cost to this, but why moan about it, this is to promote a national event going out to the world. Do you want the world to think we are a bunch of wingers and moaners.

Best not let them on this site I guess.

I have no problem with the flags, but am a bit surprised that Councillor Howard did not know that they were going up and where. He is a County Councillor on Highways, a Borough Councillor and a Town Councillor surely he would have been consulted or at least told about them. As the famed wind surfer statue had to be moved from the Highway to the roundabout because permission wasn't sort from Essex Highways these flags surely must have needed permission. Point is what else gets through without Councillor being consulted or informed?

These are not unique to Castle Point - every area where an event is being held is flying these, they're all over London!

And for those moaning about the cost - they are supplied by LOCOG, not by the councils, to area holding events to promote the boroughs. So Castle Point Council will not have paid a penny.

@PJR121 - No matter who's supplied them, we're still funding it, it's money that would be far better spent on more important things. Visitors to the area will I'm sure be delighted to see a badly patched-up vandalised bike shelter and will love waiting an hour for a bus in the evenings.

Is it not somewhat odd that people come on here and blame Castle Point for just about everything that is wrong, and now they should be spending money on pot holes and not on flags. It said above, CP are not responsible for repairing pot holes and neither are they responsible for the flags. So before you come on here moaning in ignorance, get your facts right.

AS for the flags, loo at the lamp posts on Canvey Way and other streets and you will see the fixtures are already up for the Olympic flags. Enjoy the moment, most of us will never see the like in this country again.
I would endorse what Sim0n above is saying

Now no rubbish will be a first.
Do you think the Council will do anything about the residents who put their bins on the wrong week then left uncollected or stop the ones who put them out days before collection?
Will anything be done about the boatyard opposite Benfleet Station parking all over the pavement and dragging mud everywhere? That is going to look awful on a TV panoramic sweep or do they hope the flags may hide it?
