Family wake up to knifeman in their home in Rayleigh

A YOUNG family confronted a knifeman who burst into their home in the middle of the night.

The couple, who do not want to be identified, were sleeping when the burglar smashed his way into their home in High Road, Rayleigh , brandishing a 10in kitchen knife.

He ran up to a bedroom where the woman’s 52-year-old mother and 16-year-old brother, who were visiting, were sleeping and started shouting.

The husband, 29, opened his bedroom door and confronted the man on the landing of the house before slamming the door to protect his pregnant wife and 21-month-old daughter.

His wife, 25, said: “It happened really quickly. “He came straight up the stairs. Mum said she opened her eyes and he was standing at the end of the bed holding a knife. “He was saying ‘stay there, stay there’.

“As he went to come into our room, my husband jumped up and faced him as the door opened. “The man was sniffing and shaking. My husband was screaming ‘get out of the house!’.

“He didn’t try to come in – he just went.”

Police dog handlers arrived and scoured the area, but could not find the man.

She added: “My mum said he looked a bit confused, like he was looking for someone else. “He didn’t say give me money, he didn’t ask for anything.”

The couple moved in just eight weeks ago. They had only been in bed an hour when the man broke in at 12.10am on Friday.

He tried to get in through a back door first and broke the lock, but then he smashed a glass panel next to the front door. Nothing was taken.

Investigating Officer Det Con Mark Sawyer said: “This break-in happened on a busy road near to the Shell petrol station so we’re confident someone would have seen the man running off from there or at least behaving suspiciously shortly before.

“This has been a frightening experience for this family and the man who confronted the intruder was brave to do so.”

The burglar was white, in his early twenties and was wearing a blue top. He had messy brown hair.

Anyone with information in connection with this burglary is urged to contact detectives at Southend police station on 101 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.

Assume nothing – if everyone lived by this the world would be a better place!

In the USA the law recognises that a lot of people have legitimate reasons to have knives – Electricians, Chippys, Carpet Fitters (any kind of grafter really), campers, backpackers – I could go on and list thousands! There shouldn’t be an assumption, as you say, that you would use it (on a person). All that would do is make criminals of all of the people who have legitimate reasons to have a knife.

You are all complete fking idiots! Forget the article I was responding to the first posters comments (as you can clearly bloody see if you looked or thought about it for a nanosecond)! He thinks "if you carry a knife it must be assumed you would use it" which is just ridiculous! Of course in this situation its not legit - jeeze what is wrong with you all!

I agree though, its not really the middle of the night, just as midday isn’t really the middle of the day. It is in a way but I don’t see it that way, as most people would be going to bed between 11 and 12 – therefore relative to that the middle of the night would be about 3am!

Well I think he's right! Carpenters and other tradesmen etc would keep their tools (which their knife is) in a suitable place, such as a tool belt, tool box or work van, not about their persons walking along the street! And if they did get arrested for carrying a knife innocently due to their profession it would be easy for them to provide an alibi wouldn't it. So I don't think his point is ridiculous at all. When a little thug stands up in court and gets a slap on the wrist for carrying a knife because he hasn't used it yet, THAT'S ridiculous, if joe public carries a knife it SHOULD be assumed he would use it as 90% of them would actually use it. They don't carry them to accompany their forks do they!
If a terrorist carries a bomb should we also avoid the assumption that he is going to use it???

Seriously!! We're not talking about everyday work folk who need to carry a knife to go about their daily work, we're talking about an idiot who broke into someone’s house brandishing a kitchen knife...............
...oh hang on, maybe he was a chef just looking for some work.....of course........case closed!!

" oh sorry for the intrusion, I know it's late n'all, but I was just wondering if your needed any carpet fitting, or maybe some new fitted wardrobes...........
........look, I've even brought my knife along, and I make a mean chilli" !!

About 3:30AM would be the middle of the night for me.

Well it all depends really, the middle of the night is different for everybody - i agree, it all depends what time you go to bed...........I mean what if you work nights, could middle of the night be twelve midday if you went to bed at 10am ???
