A FISHERMAN who crashed his boat into Southend Pier has been ordered to pay almost £13,000 in costs and fines.
John William Smith, 52, had been the skipper of the Paul Patrick when it crashed at about 7.05am on February 17.
He appeared at Southend Magistrates Court where he pleaded guilty to failing to keep a proper look-out, under the regulations for the prevention of collisions at sea.
He was ordered to pay a £3,000 fine, £9,873.28 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

Wow! The Pier gets fifteen quid. I wonder if it will be able to spend it how it likes or if it'll just go into some official's pocket......

He could still face further action through the civil courts for the council to re-coup its lost revnue.

As a fisherman how the hell could he make such a mistake? I take it he's now known as Uncle Albert of the cocklesheds. Dopey idiot shouldn't be allowed back on a boat.

Seconded, should never be permited to be in charge of any boat not even a row boat.

Dear Echo, why has my previous posting been removed? It was factually correct and not abusive in any way so I will repeat it.
.
It is highly unusual for our professsional fishermen to do things like this, it is usually the amateur rod and line merchants who get themselves into trouble (the RNLI or HM Coastguard can confirm this).
.
It is reported elsewhere that Mr Smith said he didn't judge his speed right and he admitted that he wasn't looking where he was going even though he was so close to the pier. That does not sound like the actions of a sober professional, or a decent amateur seaman, so I commented that maybe this was a case of a drunken sailor.
.
What is wrong with that? I suspect that the Echo's resident internet trolls - probably Asbo or E-Types - had a hand in my posting being removed.
.
Since when has the Echo removed postings just because someone doesn't agree with the opinion being expressed?

Why couldn't he? It would be perfectly reasonable for the Council to chase him through the civil courts for more compensation. You clearly know nothing about the law, or common sense so you are the one who is out of touch, you're not that old troll Asbo are you?

This case was bought by the Coastguard NOT the Council. As the skipper of the boat he has been guilty so a civil action can follow.

Why should the Council loose out?

Would you support the council if they chased after him for the lost revnue or woud you be against such an action?

I don't always agree with you Max but on this occasion I do. Judging by the quality of Mr LongJohns posting I reckon he's a reincarnation of one of the Echo's resident trolls.

It is strange how new names suddenly pop up comment one one story and they never post again...

or

The person in the story should suddenly start posting never to post again...

"wouldn't he". Skipper, not owner. Vicarious liability? Even if they do claim. What about the huge grant they got for the repair? It's falling to bits anyway. Betterment?

Mr Underpants, sorry Mr Longjohns, your postings are rambling nonsense. I think Max is right, you must be the guilty "skipper" trying to defend your actions, except you can't as crashing into the pier is indefensible, remember the pier, that huge great thing off Southend that everybody else manages to avoid hitting?

hilarious. You are of course very wrong... I just enjoy latching on to lonely individuals like you and winding them up. poor chap...I feel sorry for you really. So you "lead an exciting life" do you Mr Underpants? And you're not very literate, sort of confirms you probably are a fisherman. If you'd bothered to read previous postings you would know that I have stood up for our professional fishermen but you can't excuse the inexcusable, and bumping into the pier was pretty inexcusable. Insult me as much as you like Mr Underpants but you know nothing about me, as it happens I have probably sailed these waters for much longer than you and I go m u c h further than you lot ever do, even more so now I am retired, and I will generally continue to stand up for the pro fishermen, partly because I know some good ones and partly because I know you are often the only ones still out there when I fight my way home in heavy weather but your protestations do you and your fellow fishermen no justice, why don't you just admit you were badly in the wrong and let it go!

The old boy's lost the plot me thinks... Very funny though... Still feel sorry for you though...If you want to believe that I'm a fisherman, then fine, if it makes you feel better, I'm a fisherman, I drive a big shiny fishing boat, honk, honnnkk! It's blue. Is that colour ok?

If you are not a fisherman why on earth are you trying (unsuccessfully) to defend the drunken sailor? And if you think I've lost the plot you are seriously mistaken. Feel sorry for me? Ha ha! You are such a joker, if only you knew. I think you need to see a shrink matey.

I'm not, it is not possible to defend someone who has pleaded guilty. Did you read the article? I'm just doing a great job of winding you up and really enjoying it matey.

What makes you think you are winding me up Mr Underpants? This is just light entertainment when I'm doing more taxing tasks on the old confuser. And if you aspire to be an internet troll I have to tell you that you're miles behind the masters like old Asbo (you're not Asbos Mum are you?). As for your remark that it's not possible to defend someone who has pleaded guilty, what planet are you from, or are you just suffering from a severe does of pedanticism and a chronic lack of common sense? Of course you can defend someone who has pleaded guilty, perhaps not in a court of law but this isn't a court of law, is it? Whatever, there's certainly something wrong with you and I don't bother arguing with ***** anymore, no point.

Bet your heart starts to race every time you have to respond to my posts. You will deny this, like you have denied the fact that I am winding you up, even though you are trying to convince yourself that I'm not. I'm proper under your skin 'init. Wot's an internet troll why the way? LOL
