A FURIOUS family have hit out at the motorist who drove off after knocking down their beloved pet poodle.
The Clatworthy family, of Ferry Road, Hullbridge, claimed “any considerate human being” would have stopped to ensure the dog, which suffered a dislocated leg in the collision, was ok.
Six-year-old Izzy, a toy poodle, ran out of the family’s home and was struck as she sprinted into the street.
Owner Angela Clatworthy, 45, watched as she was dragged under the car and left on the road while the vehicle sped off.
Her husband, Wayne, said he had received a frantic phone call at work recounting what had happened.
The 46-year-old project manager said: “Izzy is usually quite good at staying in the house when we answer the door, but she had seen another dog on the other side of the road and dashed out.
“We are not blaming the driver for the fact she was in the road, because there was nothing they could have done.
“I am just angry they drove off afterwards without checking on her. They would have known they hit her, because she went under the car.”
The medical bill for Izzy’s treatment came to about £2,000. The poodle will have to spend the next five weeks in a cage to allow her to recover.
Son Louis, 21, who runs a business from the family home, said: “I was in my room and saw the door open, Izzy dash out and then my mum and younger brother Harley run out.
“It is pretty harsh that someone could just drive away from that.
“Any considerate human being would have stopped. I could not have just driven off.
“We were told if she had broken her leg she would have needed to be put down, so we are just lucky it was not that bad.”

If they cherished this dog so much, they should of had a gate on their door. Its not worth £2000 anyway for a vet bill. Its a rat of a dog!

Very much doubt you'd know about a few kilos of dog hitting over 1000KG of car at 30MPH.
Please don't be so keen to condemn the driver who (if he/she didn't know they hit a dog) has done nothing wrong here.

This wouldn't be an Echo tactic would it, to mention the amount it will cost the family to put they dog right in the hope the article might look a little more sensational, or invoke a little more sympathy for the owners?
Come to think of it, I wonder how much extra the owners would have had to pay out if the driver had come forward, claiming damage to his/her car.

The only thing was the driver should report it to the Police, perhaps after reading this the driver will and then claim for the dog owner.
I would keep quiet if I was the dog owner, and realize that dog insurance is a good idea.
