10:42am Monday 3rd September 2012 in News
A POLICE operation involving a sniffer dog to combat drugs use in Southend pubs and clubs is to be rolled out on a regular basis.
Operation Nudge took place on Friday night led by the Southend neighbourhood policing team supported by the dog section and police dog Archie.
Archie helped screen people going into licensed premises.
Sgt Rob Bell said: "Archie has been trained by Essex Police to identify people in possession of drugs and he indicates to the handler who these people are.
"During the operation Archie indicated to his handler ten times, and was correct on every occasion.”
A 30-year-old man from Southend was arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply in Alexander Street. He is on police bail until November 15, pending further enquiries.
Sgt Bell plans to develop the operation further and run it on a regular basis.
