Cops fine dozens of dodgy drivers in Basildon

ALMOST £10,000 in fines were handed out to motorists during a two-day police operation in Basildon .

Officers running Operation Sheltered Path say they were disappointed to find so many drivers breaking the law.

They carried out the checks in London Road, Vange and found: l One stolen vehicle. A man was arrested.

* Four motorists speeding.

* Two drivers without a licence.

* Eight motorists with illegal modifications, such as loud exhausts and tinted windows.

* Eight drivers who did not have insurance. Four received a £200 fine and six penalty points and four cars were seized.

* 25 drivers using mobile phones while driving. They were fined £60.

* 37 motorists not wearing a seatbelt.

* 42 drivers without an MoT certificate.

Sgt Simon Willshire, of Essex Police ’s casualty reduction unit, said: “It is disappointing to see so many drivers flouting laws designed to keep everyone using our roads safe.

“Finding 46 vehicles without an MoT is especially worrying, because these could have a dangerous fault and be a serious accident waiting to happen.

“One driver stopped without an MoT which expired four months earlier, replied: ‘I know. I can’t afford it.’ This attitude is unacceptable. We will continue to work across the area to ensure our roads are as safe as possible.”

Although the ongoing operation Sheltered Path concentrates predominantly on road safety, officers also arrested one man after their tracking system spotted a stolen vehicle from the London area.

Sgt Willshire warned that issues such as loud exhausts, overweight vehicles and tyres with dangerously worn tread were also being taken seriously.

One current trend officers pledged to crack down on was the use of overly-tinted windows.

Eight motorists were slapped with a fine, while others got off with a warning to remove the modification.

Sgt Willshire said: “It is basically like driving around with your sunglasses on.

“That is fine in the summer, but it is dangerous in the winter and at night as drivers don’t have a clear view.”

People 'chance it' because they know that the risk of getting caught is tiny. I've been driving for 44 years in the UK and never been randomly stopped once - although I have been in Spain!

Why did only four out of the eight have their car seized? I thought it was now compulsory for No Insurance....

As for tinted windows stopping dogging at Langdon Hills? Actually it doesn't.

Normally I would be on the bandwagon complaining about police not doing proper work. But honestly I am actually gobsmacked at some of the above, I apparently naively didn't think people could get away with half that stuff anymore. Imagine one of the pr1cks above crashes into you because their piece of s car is falling to bits as it has no mot, then they drive off because they have no insurance. I would be absolutely furious to say the least. I pay monies to use the road, I don't expect these scum bags to just be blatantly not giving a dam and doing as they please. Frankly If I'd have known this was going on I would have gone down to cheer the police nicking people for this stuff. Loud exhausts especially. seriously, you have a Nissan micra with a stainless cat back? Why? Who do they think is impressed by a guy with a tiny willy driving a Nissan micra with a 50'000 decibel exhaust? No offence to micra drivers, it's really just the exhaust I have the beef with not that car.

With regard to drivers using their mobiles in cars, i am amazed by the number of "professional drivers" using their phones on the move.

If i had a job which was mostly driving i would treat myself to a cheap hands free. I often see white van man and lorry drivers on the phone - a hands free is only aroud a 10 pounds

I'm sure I've read statistics that reckon a lot of the time, drivers caught without insurance/MOT/licens
e are also wanted for other crimes/offences.

In an ideal World it'd be better having more cops on the beat and whilst this isn't an obvious way of catching criminals, it can be quite useful!

Aside from that, I'm all for getting dangerous cars and uninsured drivers off the road!

A good effort ! What fffukin effort ? A computer tells them who to stop and if that is a good effort then how about the 88 year old woman who was robbed ? Was that a good effort ? The woman that was sexually assaulted was that a good effort. The 13 year old that was robbed by knive point, was that a good effort by police ? Come on, live in the real world. They drive about and a bib bib bib comes up on screen and says Stop this car and that a good effort while some poor old lady is being punched and robbed. Just shut up and dont write rubbish.

This isn't a particularly good job of describing what your actual issue is?

I'm sorry to tell you that crime happens - and dam those police for not following around each and every one of us all day long just in case we are a victim! The people you should be angry at are your fellow man who insist on raping and mugging. Police are not the perpetrators here and they can't be everywhere simultaneously. Good on them for developing technology that makes nicking scum bags driving without insurance or MOT easier and less costly. If a computer could tell them at a glance who was running around mugging people that would be great, but for the mean time this isn't minority report!

A good effort for stopping illegal drivers from being on the roads! Those idiots without licenses or on their phones who hurt and kill people in hit and runs because they don't know how to drive and/or are not concentrating as they are on their phone, those with no insurance raising every other road users insurance, those without MOT's whose cars have the potential for parts flying off them causing hazards on the roads, the return of a stolen vehicle from a victim of crime etc etc

Clealy you're not a driver otherwise your appreciation for this work would have been evident. Yes

Yes it is incredibly unfortunate about the poor old lady but I agree with Dan, that is not the fault of the Police, they cannot be with everyone all the time however this is a good prevention tactic for those who could cause serious damage to others, their property and even cost lives!

Isn't enforcing the laws what the Police are supposed to do every day of the week? Why does it merit a special operation or media headlines when they are actaully just doing what they are paid to do?
Imagine if that level of (in) activity was really worthy of major news... I think it would go something like this.

News at Ten duh duh duh duh der..this just in breaking news...shoe shop assistant sells pair of loafers...we'll have up to the minute updates on this story as it breaks. Now back to the headlines...dong! Man in dewsbury buys new hat from hat shop. Dong! woman in thirsk buys pint of milk in Tesco's...Dong! Child buys copy of the Beano from WH Smiths in Musselburgh..and so on.

Please give me strength. Wake me up when the plod do something above and beyond the mundane and actually newsworthy.

And yes PC Dibell was the honourable exception to this. One of the vanishing breed of real coppers. But the rest?

To those that think it is a waste of time etc.

See how you feel when an illegal driver driving a car that is on the road illegally runs down and kills a member of your family then drives off!!!

Yes I know I have had it happen to me. It took 4 months before the person was arrested ( someone gave the police the information they needed) and they were driving around all that time as well.

So I say let's have more of these operations. How about the industrial areas?

Thanks for your input. I am afraid that I am not swayed by your arguments and remain of the opinion that the police have made a good effort in this case. I would be happy to read similar stories from around the county on a daily basis. Whether they will do a good job in the cases you mention remains to be seen.

For the youngsters who would have to pay thousands for insurance, a £200 fine is a bargain.

PJR-121 says...
9:01am Fri 7 Sep 12

You say that Nebs, BUT...

The six points are added to the licence which then must be declared. Speeding fines (SP30's) don't bump the insurance up by much, but a no insurance code (IN10) can add over £200 a year on top, and that's for between three and five years, depending on the insurer.

The car is seized, and taken to a pound, where you are charged at least £150 to release it.

To be able to release it, you have to have insurance. So £200 fine, £150 release fee, and an additional £200 on an insurance certificate adds up to a hefty lot.

nicknows says...

I really feel it is about time that road tax was put on fuel and that drivers had to display on their windscreens a disc for their insurance and a disc for their MOT to be colour coded in the same way as road tax.

That way members of the public would be able to report cars that were on the road with out of date information being displayed and the community officers that patrol our streets would be able to observe the vehicles.

Yes I report vehicles on the road with out of date road tax. Having lost a relative who was killed by a car on the road illegally and spoken to the police over a period of several months whilst waiting for the driver ( also on the road illegally) to be caught and then taken to court. I learned that most cars that don’t have road tax don’t have insurance or MOT’s.

The mother of the person who died takes things even further. She photographs drivers on their mobile phones and passes the information on. Whilst there is breath in our bodies neither of us will stop doing this!

That sounds promising. Maybe they could publish a list on the internet of all SP30's and IN10's to stop people forgetting about them when they renew. Also, how about a list of cancelled policies where people get insurance to recover their car or get a tax disc, and then immediately cancel the policy.
