Man missing off coast of Southend update

A MISSING man who sparked a full scale search and rescue operation may still be alive.

Police investigating the disappearance of Stephen Jones are looking into a series of cash machine transactions in Sussex made with his bank card.

Several personal possessions belonging to Mr Jones, 52, were recovered from the beach off Western Esplanade in Southend on August 30.

The homeless man led was last known to be living in a south-London hostel.

A search of the water recovered nothing but police say his cash card has been used at post office ATMs in Brighton on three separate days earlier this month.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "At this stage, we’re not sure whether Stephen entered the sea or whether he has left Essex to continue with his life. We’re asking anyone who may have seen him to contact us so that we can provide his family with some substantial update.”

Anyone with information on Stephen Jones’s whereabouts should contact Essex Police on 101.
