Residents’ anger at parking proposals for Laindon

RESIDENTS claim parking rules being drawn up to stop commuters clogging up roads in Langdon Hills are out of date.

For years residents have had their lives blighted by commuters using their roads as car parks to avoid having to use the expensive Laindon station car park.

However, plans to tackle the problem by introducing no parking and residential zones in various roads have been criticised by a residents’ association.

David Burton-Sampson, the group’s chairman, said a “brief consultation” about the changes was carried out by Essex County Council four years ago, but nothing happened due to a lack of funding.

He said: “It might have worked four years ago, but it will make matters worse. Since that consultation, parking rules have changed so commuters are parking in different areas to where they were.

“They are parking along Valence Way and on the bends, which is extremely dangerous.”

Mr Burton-Sampson, who has lived on the estate for nine years, said the association has now launched a consultation.

He claims the association has contacted the county council’s highways department three times in the last two weeks, but so far no one has got in touch.

An Essex County Council spokeswoman said: “Essex County Council is following up on the results of the commuter review and launched a public consultation on September 7 seeking residents’ views on the proposal to introduce a residents’ parking scheme in Langdon Hills, to help alleviate the parking issues being experienced in the locality.

“The scheme includes an extension of the existing residents’ parking scheme, which is currently in place in part of Valence Way.

“We would like to encourage residents to put their views forward. All comments will be considered before any decision is taken on whether to implement the scheme.”

Of course, the simple solution is for there to be free parking available at the station

As long as they park safely in the road then there is no problem. If they park dangerously or cause an obstruction then report them to the police, otherwise they have as much right to park there as anyone else.

i disagree, Parking restrictions have to be put in place, otherwise it becomes a joke.Residents have a right to complain, the way the parking is in Laindon, you dare not have any visitors to your home in the day, as they cant park anywhere

Why cant these stupid lazy office sitting suit wearing commuters walk to the station, or perhaps cycle if they live over a mile away. The station needs to provide good bike locking sheds like the ones at Benfleet. And of course good CCTV to put their minds at ease when they are at work that their bikes are safe. If that was the case, residents are happy because their streets are cleared, and commuters are happy cos their bikes are safe. Everyone is a winner.

As someone who lives off Durham Road, which has a major problem with commuter parking, David Burton-Sampson and his so called residents’ association does not speak for me or large numbers of other people. I'm glad Essex County Council is planning to address this problem.

As one of hundreds of people belonging to the Langdon Hills Residents Association (which actually does exist), I expect that a2clan has his own driveway, living off Durham Road. Unlike residents living on the Langdon hills Estate mentioned in the article. So, no, he is not speaking for you!

I think it is just 'assumed' that we all feel the same way about the idea of parking permits for the whole estate. Im very much in favour of it. Why should the commuters park for free when i have to pay to park outside my own house fifteen feet away? I hope these changes do happen. It seems that its only opposed by the people who do not already pay for parking outside their house. which is a little selfish

Riding a bicycle isn't the solution. These people don't live 1 mile away, but maybe 4/5/6 miles away. When you say "Everyones a winner", the commuters are already winning... To cycle 6+ miles a day is not winning.

Commuters are having a hard enough time having to pay a fortune to use the train, and then to add another £6/day parking is an insult. I assume they pay their taxes, so have a right to park as they please (if not illegally).
