NEARLY 500 new jobs could be created in Basildon if a major new distribution centre gets the go ahead.

Roxhill Developments Ltd, a nationwide industrial and commercial developer, wants planning permission for a large warehouse storage centre on the site of the former offices of finance firm First Data in Christopher Martin Road.

No client has been secured yet, but if approved, the firm is confident of attracting major retailers such as supermarkets or other big brand stores to set up a regional distribution depot.

Tony White, of planning agent Michael Sparks Associates, said: “This is for outline planning permission, but our client is confident there will be a lot of interest if it is granted. We would work with the council on the detail of the scheme if it goes ahead.”

The site is 8.4acres and could take warehouses up to 17,652 square metres in size.

Basildon Council leader Tony Ball welcomed the fact a large company was keen to invest in Basildon which hopes to remain the business hub of south Essex.

With a change in the law such a site could represent the perfect opportunity to develop a cannabis growing facility with all the benefits that would come with such an enterprise. Government owned and run perhaps?. It probably won't happen in my lifetime but I am sure it will happen one day.

Is that not old stone face Tony Ball in the picture... smiling to try beguile readers into thinking it is all above board.

Its the old "let us build 8 supermarkets and a row of betting shops on common ground and it will create millions of new jobs in the area"

He also looks a little like Jimmy Saville. Have you ever seen a more "Trust in me" face than that one? When he speaks, does he have a sibilant row of "esses" on the end of each sentence?

Anyone remember the 800 new jobs created with the Barclay white elephant building? that was the first lie about jobs, and our council has never looked back since!
