Traffic cops take on challenge for charity

FOUR traffic cops have completed an epic journey through Europe in aid of charity.
They painted an old banger and drove it through eight countries to raise case for Little Havens children’s hospice.
Pals PC Rob Brettell, PC Steve Catton, PC Ian York-Wade and PC Mark Phillips, based at Southern road policing unit, all took part.
The task was part of Havens '99 challenge' which aims to make £99,000 for the charity from this Summer's fundraising.
PC Brettell explained that their work dealing with fatal road crashes had prompted them to take on the challenge.
Tweeiting the Echo from the road, he said: “Having seen how precious life is doing our job and the wonderful work Havens do we wanted to try and help raise money for their 99 challenge.
“We have lost three friends this year to cancer and a friend lost a child who was cared for by Havens Hospice, hence we chose them.”
Their vehicle of choice was a 'T' reg Volvo v40, worth just £300, which had to have it's brakes replaced immediately before the trip.
In total they notched up 2000 miles over five days, raising more than £2,000 for the Thundersley-based charity in the process.
Finishing the journey, they tweeted: "We made it. Lichtenstein via the Alps. The plucky little car has worked so hard and achieved so much.
Long days but worth it."
