Parents fear for children with lack of safe parking
8:30am Monday 8th October 2012 in News By Luke Lambert
Car "chaos" outside Janet Duke Primary School
PARENTS are concerned their children are at risk due to a lack of parking near a Basildon primary school.
Parents say they find it a "nightmare" dropping off and picking up their children from Janet Duke Primary School on Markhams Chase.
Martin Saunders, from Tyler Avenue, says parents park their cars on the curbs all the way down the road since Markhams Chase Sports Centre across the road shut, making way for further housing.
Mr Saunders, 46, said: “It is extremely difficult for parents at times. For parents who work long hours and have limited time to take their children there is no other way but to drop your children off. A lot of parents are having to get to the school extremely early to get their children at the end of the school day and that simply isn’t fair.”
Donna Blythe, 39, from Gower Chase in Laindon said she had been hit by a car outside the school due to a lack of parking space.
“A couple of months ago a woman reversed into me in her haste to back into a space. I have been sent to the hospital for physio treatment ever since. It really is an accident waiting to happen and I strongly believe this could happen again. I am just thankful it was me and not a child.”
Fiona Adeniji said: “Parking is an issue and parents are having to park by the road which isn’t ideal. We need a lollipop person to patrol the road but haven’t been able to secure one at this time. We would encourage all interested parties to volunteer for a couple of hours in the morning or afternoon to help the school and the children.”

Unless you have a brand new school built on green belt thus allowing a generous car park then you will always struggle .But then again parents don't help ,I seen some pretty dodgy parking in my time. And despite the continous reminders parents don't walk or park and walk but love dropping as near as possible ..they consider it a challenge.

It's always been 'hell' for pedestrians trying to walk past that school when all the parents are hanging about outside in their cars, on the pavement for ages before school time finishes.

Close the road to all traffic for 30 mins in the morning and afternoon.
Force the lardies out of their 4x4s and other benefit funded vehicles and let them waddle.

Get the children to walk.
If they live too far away, then park a few streets away and walk from there.

Have they ever heard of legs? They able you to walk. If they walked instead of using their car then maybe none of this would happen. Anything to get in the paper.

If the parents have to get to the school extremely early to pick up their kids then they can't work that longer hours!

The only people the children are at risk from are the parents themselves who are in such a rush to dump and run that they cannot park safely.

All the remarks re walking, what about the parents that need to be at work at 9am on the dot, as many of us do work even in Basildon, so parking half a mile away then walking that simply means we would be late for work everyday.

....and yes, I am a parent, but I do not fuss over my kids, they are growing up to be independent and not rely upon their mum and dad.
Many of these kids are probably old enough to walk themselves to school.
Do the school not provide walking buses? If not, why not?

Do you really think 6 years old is old enough to walk 1 mile to school on their own, admittedly when they are older yes they can walk or get a bus, and i do not think any of my friends would be willing to walk to my house then pick my child up then walk the 1 mile to school and vice versa, there simply should be more parking assigned

I do not have blinkers on but I simply would not trust another parent to walk my child to school and pick her up again considering she is only six, you obviously are not a parent yourself, as you would then understand the joy that parents get dropping their kids off to school and picking them back up again.

When I attended it, I WALKED from the top of Tyler Avenue, LAINDON, through Bluehouse Farm, and on to the school in LAINDON.
It is about TIME, the Echo checked their maps with regards as to WHERE different places are, so as to report the TRUE facts.

Janet Duke School is in LAINDON, and most certainly NOT Basildon. I should know, as I was born in LAINDON, as well as attended Markhams Chase School, now renamed Janet Duke, in honour of this WONDERFUL Headmistress.
